I picked up some fir bark substrate.This stuff is OK to use,right ??.Should I do any prep to it ?,,rinse REAL good,,bake it ??.I always bake the wood I pick up from the pet store.
I also got a UTH,,but they didn't have any thermostat hook up things,or what ever you call it.The one I got is very popular.They sell them the most.It says "it will use between 5 and 25 watts",,what does that mean ??.
 
Sorry, fir = pine - anything resinous gives off fumes that can be poisonous to reptiles. Strongly recommend you don't use it.

Any heat source needs to be regulated, so please buy a thermostat. I've had unregulated UTHs reach 110 degrees and I'm sure they'll go higher than that. 90 degrees is the max a Corn should have. Better to spend a little extra than have a burned Corn.

The watts quoted, refers to how much electricity the UTH will use.

yup Fir is bad. if you want to go with wood chips/bark and dont like aspen, try cypress mulch or coconut bark.
i use coconut bark in all my vivs. even for my rainbow boa. it holds moisture well or it can be used dry. it's easy to clean up and the snakes love to burrow in it.

if you cant find a rheostat at your pet store, buy online. i highly recommend www.reptilesupply.com i've bought stuff from them before and they're usually cheaper than the pet stores on a lot of stuff. i get the coconut bark from them as well and it's cheaper than the pet stores even with shipping.
