How do you measure your cornie without upsetting it?I have heard that measuring sheds is unreliable,so I was wondering this as mine don't stay still.I can't get it to sit nice and still on a ruler,lol,so how does everyone else do it? And would I be right in saying that to weigh a snake you weigh the bag first ,then occupied?This is the only way I can think of to weigh one,but I'll be blown if anyone has taught thier snake to "sit and stay"!!!Laugh!

Thanks for that!I still have a problem though,I don't own a camera or else everyone would be sick of me posting pics of my amels!!!So now am unsure of what to do.What's this string thing?How do you do it that way? :shrugs:
 
You can use a shed skin for a *rough* idea. Take off approx 10%-15% of the length of the skin to get the *rough* length of the snake.

Otherwise, just try and hold a piece of string along the length of his body as best you can then measure that. Easier said than done though!

Weighing in a bag or a box/tub or something is the way to go. Obviously weighing the empty container first to get your tare weight.

Serps Measure program is the best way, It is actually pretty accurate. But another way (especially if you dont have a camera) is to let the snake crawl on some sort of straight crevice or even a clear tube large enough for the snake to crawl through but not large enough for it to turn around. the snake will crawl in a straight line, and if your lucky s/he will stop long enough for you to measure. My hatchling crawls in a straight line on my keyboard in between the letter keys and the function keys. He was in a straight line then stopped, I measured, then he left me a present right there on the keyboard, :grin01: and then started moving forward again. :sidestep:
 
I bet that was nice for you to clean up!!!I haven't been pooed on at all!!Mine have always done it at home after a good drink!!I may well try the key board thing though,just hope the same doesn't happen to me!![tempt fate now!]The shed measurements were Scylla was 14 inches and Medusa was 12/13,although it could have been more because it was rolled up about half way down and i had some difficulty unravelling it.My math is poo as well,so if there is someone who could do the working out for me I would love to know the estimated sizes of my little corncrocs!!Please??Cheers!
 
10% of 14 inches is 1.4 inches or 1 and 1/3 inches. Your amels are between 12 and 12 1/2 inches long (give or take a few 16th's).

If you have a scale with a TARE function first put the tub/bag on the scale, hit TARE, this will zero the scale reading. Then when you return the tub/bag with the snake in it you will get only the weight of the snake, even tho you weighed the tub/bag as well. If you do not have the TARE feature you weigh the tub/bag with and without the snake in it, then subtract the weight of the tub/bag alone from the weight of the snake in it, there is the weight of your snake.

The easiest way to measure the length of a snake is to put them in some type of clear container, or a glass tank that is long enough for the snake to stretch full length of. They will eventually cruise along the edge and allow you to either measure directly along the snake or mark it to be measured later (when you find the damn ruler [don't ask]). I said this is the easiest remember, not necessarily the fastest method as I am positive the snakes like to mess with our minds and won't co-operate when we want.
 
I have a small bag I can weigh them in,how often are you supposed to do this?I have never weighed them,But I will start doing so because then it might pick up on any problem i might have missed.Does everyone weigh thier hatchlings?
 
What about one of those flexible fabric measuring tapes? That would seem to work well to me. That way it bends with the curves and you dont have to worry abou them stretching out. Just a thought
