How does any snake know if the other is male or female?

I am no expert but i believe snakes, like other animals, rely on scent to identify other animals, So maybe pheremones or other chemicals come into play.... :shrugs:

It's pheromones. One of the many tricks used to get a hybrid between species that ordinarily don't is to rub the fresh skin of a female from one species all over the other species. Another trick is to have a female of the right species in the same tub and manually make sure the tail of the male lines up with the girl of other species.

It's all about the scent.
