How long should I wait?

I'm still weary on the heating. I have an under tank heater and a thermometer and one to keep track of the humidity, but I keep thinking he's not gonna be warm enough lol

It is a scary thing when you get your first snake. You want to do everything perfect. Then, once you've had them awhile, you realize that they are much more hardy than we give them credit for (that's not to say you shouldn't give them the best possible care, just saying they can deal with our little screw ups better than we think they can). Overheating is my only big concern. They don't handle high temps well....

I knew it wouldn't be long before you joined us Daenerys (sorry, I don't know your name). You've been quite active around here lately! We like to see that (congrats on 100 posts). :) I think that most of my snakes being in tubs is why my mom still thinks I only have around 20 (which is what I tell her when she asks how many I have).

Hahah thanks! My name is Danielle but call me Daenerys since there is another more established user with my name here already ;) And I suppose its a good thing people are starting to notice me here more! When I get a new obsession I really throw myself into it, and corn snakes are my latest!

Yeah thats why when I got mine I got him a storage bin for a home, I didn't want people coming in my dorm and seeing a vivarium all out in the open, lol. And since an apartment will be a personal home for myself it'd make things all the easier to keep the contraband hidden!

Oh yeah! That's just about perfect for the warm end of his tank. I would call anything over 88 or so 'too high' (but even so, there have been times when my house has been about 90 for short periods of time with no ill effects, but it sure is scary).

Awesome xDAnothing thing,I don't have the heater on the underside,I have it just on the side. I just keep having these visions of my snake sitting directly ontop of it (it's a glass aquarium btw) when he burrows under the aspen, and burning himself,so I thought I'd just put it on the side. Is that ok or should I move it?

Well hello officially Danielle (I know I posted in one of your other threads, but I don't think I ever said hi...)! I much prefer to call people by their real names when I can, it just seems more personal and friendly. So Danielle you will be (unless there would be confusion in a thread where both you and the other Danielle are posting). Here's hoping that your new 'obsession' will become a lifelong passion as it has for most of us around here. :)

And speaking of names...Zombie?? Let's hear it (I always manage to miss Intro threads, so I never catch people's names)...

Well, without a something to regulate the temp of your heater, I would say that having it on the side is safer. Ideally, corns need the belly heat to digest most efficiently, so as soon as you can, I would get a thermostat/rheostat (you can run a search here to find out how to make your own if you'd like) and move the UTH. If it is stuck directly to the side, you may need to buy a new one, I just don't trust ones that have been stuck, removed, and placed on a new surface....

Oie,this thermostat/rheostat thing confuses me. What exactly do I do with them? How does that regulate the UTH?

I'm such a newb T_T lol

Most forums I go on forbid the use of real names, but alright go ahead hahah. And thanks for finally welcoming me! I think my greetings thread only ever got one post on it and it was like a few days after I actually joined. And it probably will, I love my little snake to death :D

No worries, that's what we're here for! You would plug the UTH into the thermostat instead of directly into the wall. Then, the temp is adjusted using the thermostat. Some really expensive ones are super fancy and digital, but the basic ones work just as well (they just take some tweaking to get it right). You should also look into getting a thermometer with a probe, or a temp gun of some sort (ProExotics, I believe, has them for $25...I use mine all the time, so it is well worth getting one) to accurately measure your temps. You'd want to measure directly on the glass above the UTH, not the temp above the substrate.
