How long...

I'm curious about growth times, myself. My corn is about 4 weeks old and 20" long (so I was told, but i'm guessing he's closer to 2 months because of the length).

At eating one pinky per week, how fast can I expect him to grow?

He's gonna be huuuuuge! :D

Jake: Fluffy... haha! What a great name.

Hi Spirit. I have two hatchlings which are fed every four days. I dont think once a week is enough for a little one!!! Try feeding every four days and watch it grow!! :)
Hi Jake the Snake!! Growth rates are a bit individual like us really. I save the skins after each shed to monitor my snakes' growth rates. At the moment, both my hatchlings are growing approximately between 3 and 4 inches every 5-6 weeks.
If you do start to save the skins, let us know how yours is growing??!!!!

I feed my snake every 6-7 days. It seems like its grown(at least an inch) since I got it 3 1/2 weeks ago. I feed it 2 pinkies and it eats them up verrrrry quickly! I cant wait till it grows! :)

Wow spirit...20" in four weeks...I would think it is older than that...seems to be an incredible amount of growth in a short amount of time...probably will be a monster!!

Try out the Snake Measurer from Serpwidgets

If you have a digital camera...this is absolutely the best way to measure your snakes.

I think he's closer to 2 months (MAYBE 3), to be honest. He was around 14-15" at birth. Biggest of the bunch, so I'm going to assume he's going to be over 5' when full grown.

angeladams: That's what I would concider speed feeding (imho), and is something I'm not willing to do to my baby. "Speed feeding" may increase the growth rate of your snake, but greatly shortens the lifespan and can cause all sorts of health related problems in the long run.

One pinky every 7 days is more than enough for good health (at this size). I will be upgrading to hoppers very soon though. Wheeeee!!

BTW: That link ROCKS! I will for sure try it out when I get home. Thanks!

PS... regarding my prev reply: I've had Max for just over 2 weeks now and I've definitely noticed a change in growth (and only 2 feedings so far). I should have named him weedboy. :D

I have a normal corn with some hets that was hatched in the beginning of May who is over 20"...and I thought HE was big...

I agree...once a week is plenty...three times a week doesn't seem like it gives them enough time to cycle. Besides...I like to handle mine...and never do it with a full belly...so if I fed every third day I would never get any handling time. Like to watch them hunt when they get hungry, too...they never move around as much as when they are getting hungry.

Yeah...that is amazing growth.
And that site AND the program are well worth the time...

I have never found a better, easier, or more accurate way to measure my snakes.

Spirit, I can assure you that i am not speedfeeding my snakes. It is quite normal to feed a Hatchling every 4-5 days. When my snakes get to hopper stage, i will be feeding them every 7-10 days. Obviously when i increase the size of prey, i decrease the frequency.
You have also said you will be upgrading from pinkies to a hopper very soon. Surely you mean a fuzzie? Usually you feed pinkies first, then fuzzies, then hoppers......etc
I recommend some books..... The Corn Snake Manual by Kathy Love and The Guide to owning a corn snake by Jerry G Walls. These books give you advice on feeding in accordance to individual snake age and size.

Feeding frequency......

Hello again Spirit. I can also recommend you look up this forum....
www.csftp.co.uk. It's the U.K. Cornsnake Fan Club. If you click on "Caresheet", this also gives you information on basic husbandry and feeding info.
You can also use the Search on this forum under Feeding. There is a thread called "Shedding and Feeding etc" by mylongears, posted on 07/04/2004. Very interesting responses. A particular response from CAV might interest you. CAV is a very highly respected person on this forum and knows his stuff. I trust his judgement.
Thanks. :)

Should I feed my corn once every 4 days too cause i think that its only 2/3 months old plus it only eats pinkies cause of the size of Gollum's jaw.
I am going to take Gollum into my college for my teacher to have a look at. (I go to Shuttleworth College and I am doing a National Diploma in Animal Management) James is going to sex and age Gollum for me as he is stilla baby its difficult for me to tell yet.

Woah, no need to go on the defense, AA. Firstly, I appoligise. I thought you were feeding 2 pinkies every 4 days (I misread). While I appreciate your advice though, I've done TONS of research on corn snake care (it's about all I've done for the last 2 weeks) and I'm sticking to my once a week (5-7 day) feedings. I think most would agree that once every 3 days is too much, so in my opinion, 4 is pushing it, but 5 is alright. Feeding too often WILL speed up the growth rate of your snake and a snake that grows too fast will live a shorter life and could develop health probs down the road. Don't forget corn snakes have a very slow metabolism and don't need to be kept full of food. A snake can go months without eating, but that doesn't mean it's healthy either...

For sake of argument though, I linked the thread you mentioned above.
shedding and feeding etc

I agree completely with this "Hatchlings can actually benefit from more frequent feedings IMO. They get past the fragile stage much faster and move up to the more nutritious fuzzy and adult sized mice." (also note the IMO, and "hatchling") Getting them past the fragile stage, that is. Though while I do trust that he knows his stuff (very well, might I add), it's still just his opinion. In fact I sent him out a pm the other day thanking him for all his help here on the board. I've learned a lot from him.

I know a breeder (who might I add has owned -in total- 87 snakes which are all -but 4- on loan at zoos and such, and he's the owner of a snake which happens to be the only morph known in canada) who will argue till he turns blue that you should NEVER feed 2 pinkies at a time, and NEVER less than 5-6 days apart. It's all who you talk to, really. Everyone has their own opinion as to what is best for your snake, but the facts do speak for themselves.

One question though... to those of you who do feed your snakes every 3-4 days, how do you manage handling time?

NB: I dont pretend to know everything (I'm still very much learning, in fact), nor will I argue who's right or wrong (this is not about right or wrong, it's about the well being of your snake). This is what I've learned through hours and hours of research and talking to breeders. Just trying to help, and if I can help... I will. That's my two cents. Shutting up now. :)

Actually, I'm curious...

At what age would you all concider a hatchling to no longer be a hatchling (and what would a, uh, toddler? snake be called)? What are the stages (and ages)?

Eg. Hatching (or newborn), toddler, child, teen, adult, etc...

Edit: Is this a really stupid question? LOL

*mental note*
The only stupid questions are the ones not asked...
and
There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers...

:poke: :nyah: (<--- okay, I just really liked this smilie)

Spirit.
I am not going to pursue this subject with you any further. I will continue to follow advice from established snake/cornsnake owners, and you continue to follow your sources of info.

Isn't that how it's BEEN done? Just trying to help... No worries. :)

Edit: I need to wake up.

What I MEANT was that we all have different sources and we all raise our snakes in the manner we believe is in the best interest of the snake.

I'm here (as I hope we all are) to educate others (if I can) and (more importantly) further educate myself.

My reason for the long posts was because you've been speaking directly to me in this entire thread, so I felt the need to voice what I have learned, and what *I* feel is the best for raising *MY* snake. There's no need to make it personal. It's all about doing the reasearch, listening to what others have to say, then deciding for yourself what's best for your snake. I would NEVER tell a mother how to raise her child, but if I believe something is endangering the child's health (for example)... you bet your boopie I'm gonna speak up. In the end, it's up to you.

Okay... final words. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
Cheers. Over and out. ;)
