how much aspen

i use aspen for my tank but i was wondering how much i should use?right now there is about 1/2 in to 1 inch throughout the whole thing... is this too little.. does it need more? and also i saw that my snake like to burrow and hide under the aspen. but the glass directly ontop of the UTH is really hot.. What can i do to prevent it from being burned on the glass. the temp on the aspen is just right but if he goes underneath it then what?

I'd make sure to have at least 2" of substrate and you need a thermostat to keep the heat under control. You can go a couple of different routes when it comes to thermostats:

The BAH-1000 will fluctuate the temps a few degrees but is an inexpensive option.
