Simple question, but I am curious. Please answer once for how often and once for number of animals.

I clean as their water level drops or gets soiled. I normally do a complete clean once a week. I only have 5 snakes.

I said daily, but that's not exactly true. You didn't have an option for every three days and that's about what I do.
I used to change it once a week when I feed him, but I would notice the sides of the bowl feeling a little slimy when I rinsed it and I think that's gross. I have noticed that he almost always drinks right away when I change it too, this makes me think that fresher water really matters to him.

I tend to think of my pets as people, and treat them as I'd want to be treated. I wouldn't drink or bathe in day-old water, so I always keep my baby's water and food fresh. Then again, I currently have two dogs and a cat who *think* they're people.

There was a "twice a week" option, why didn't you go for that? :shrugs:

Can I have a glass of water, Mommy?... Please?

I wouldn't go as far as saying I think of Nibblet as a person, but I know what you mean. I change her water every morning, before I go to work. Not only is it clean, it's cool. (who wants to drink warm water- :puke01: .)

I also check it when I return. And if it's soiled :eek1: (aspen dust floating on top?), I'll change it then, too.

But, I only have one snake. So as a bare minium, water should be changed as needed. I'd hate to think that some of us see water that isn't fresh, know it should be changed, but don't because it's not on "the schedule".:nope:

Some may think it's excessive, but to me- it's good husbandry. Since she's in a glass viv, I can't help but see her environment (like my https://cornsnakes.mpm.pm/XF/index.php?posts/369209/shoe collection- but I digress). Anyhoo, if anything is amiss (a vine fell, hide overturned, whatever), naturally I'd fix it. So if I see that the water needs changing...

8 pets - As needed.

Dogs and cats get fresh water daily because they are constantly emptying the bowl. Typically the geckos and the cornsnake get fresh water every 4 - 5 days unless it's empty or pooped in.

Currently 10 pets over here - I'm not sure my fish have any real use for drinking water though :grin01:

The snakes generally get fresh water every 2/3 days.

The cats hardly ever drink water (they get about 90% of their water from eating cat food) but we still change it every day. Same with my snake, when I get her out to handle her I carry her to the kitchen with me and empty out her water bowl. If it's the day after she's eaten, I try and disturb her as little as possible when I take it out. My mother thinks I'm crazy for giving her bottled water, I think she thinks I'm making up chlorine levels as an excuse to spoil her. :D

I let the water bowls get almost empty and then rinse and refill them. If the bowls are slimy, I wash them first. If not, I don't. I would of course change the water if it were soiled, but the snakes never do that. The tortoises get fresh water every day because they make theirs filthy. The mammals get fresh water when they've drunk what they had. Every once in a while, we put their water bowl through the dishwasher. The dogs go out and dig up cat poop to eat and they eat anything and everything that falls on the floor, regardless of whether it's dusty or has cat hair on it. One of our cats drinks out of the toilet bowl even if it hasn't been flushed (we live in the desert and try to conserve water here). I really don't think they care if their water is dusty.

I don't even have any plants that would like water once a day because I plant drought-tolerant stuff, and I won't dump out all that perfectly good water in the snake bowls. In my house, that would be a waste of water. Of course, I also will pick up a glass of water that I didn't finish two days ago and drink it if I'm thirsty. If I can actually taste dust, I'll find a plant to water. If I can't, I drink it "stale." I also drink the Phoenix tap water that kind of tastes like dirt fresh out of the tap, and I drink out of those hoses that are not approved for drinking out of if I'm working outside. I'm not very picky about my water, so I'm not very picky about my pets' water either.

Yug, that sounds kinda funky! Glad I don't live in the desert or I'd be spending tons money on bottled H2O!

I want to add that I don't look down on anyone who has different practices than I do - I know my previous reply to this post sounded kind of... can't think of the word, but crappy. >.<

LOL! Yep. Kristi drinks bottled water and I don't. I don't feel like buying water is a justified expenditure. Snakes, yes, bottled water, no. I don't mind that she buys it, but if I don't drink it then we buy half the water. And I really don't prefer it anyway so why drink bottled? But, I sometimes live in settings where I bathe in turbid river water that you need to be careful not to drink and drink boiled river water that still has floaters, so my perspective on water would probably never shift over to where your lies. :)

I change the water every 4 days whilst my 2 are in there feeding tubs unless it's solied then I'll change it then as well.
