how often to handle?

hey guys -
I was just wondering - How often should I be handling my snake?

I know not handle it for about 48 hours after eating (info picked up the forums :)lol

But what about in between that? My snake is about 8 months old now and I want it to be "well adjusted" by the time its fully grown. by well adjusted I mean I dont really wanna be bitten one day.

Are there any negative effects to handling it for 5 or 10 min everyday? Or whats the minimum amount - so it doesnt lose its tameness (cough) so to speak.

Last thing - What do you think of Phoenix as a name for an amel blood:)

Thanks guys - sinse the joining the forums I've learned tons:)

Handling your snake from 10-30mins per day seems fine to me, unless he seems obviously stressed. I like Phoenix.

And how do you know if he's stressed?
Over time, you'll start picking up on 'body language' of your snake, but if you watch the mid section, you can see it expand and contract with each breath. When it starts feeling stressed, you'll see the breathing become more rapid. That's a good sign that play time should be ending soon.

Also, most young snakes are a bit flighty at first when taken out of their house, but calm down fairly quickly. As the stress starts to build up, a couple of mine start to get flighty again, along with rapid breathing.

Again, you'll learn to pick up on the queues they give you.

Good luck!

A good example of stressed would be when the snake is constantly trying to get away from you and making a break for its hide. I usually get my snake out along with one of his hides (usually the one he's in or on) and after a while he will keep trying to go back to his hide.

I don't really think there is a set time as far as handling goes in terms of keeping the snake tame, I think it's going to vary with each snake, just like animals have different personalities so do snakes, from what I've gathered so far.

I started handling my snake for 15 min at a time from day one and he was just fine. I gradually kept increasing the time I've had him out and I'm up to 30 min now (in only 5 days, I think I got a really good snake, very good disposition my snake seems to have).

So just pay attention to the clues he gives you and you should be fine, that and just use your instincts and common sense. Put yourself in the snakes shoes, in other words try to look at things from his perspective.

well trying to break away may not be stress, my snake does that jus because hes so young and isnt used to being handled yet.

Mine too. I just figure you'd only want to keep him from getting away from you and going into his hide for so long before it would stress him out too much. So after my snake does that for a few minutes I take it as a cue to let him go back to his hide, this usually only happens at about the 30 min mark, before that he seems content to want to explore.

THANKS PEOPLE

Thanks for the quick response guys -

I was handling it that much - but wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing.

Can anyone tell me how bad a bite from a corn is? This is my first snake and it hasn’t shown any intention to have a go at me yet - just curious as to how bad it is. lol

My minds at ease now. lol - Going to go with the name phoenix - I think its cool.

Thanks again for the quick response – I can’t get over how helpful everyone on this forum is :)

well, I am one who doesnt handle a snake for that long but lots do... its just me I think :)

a bite.... well, depending on size and how upset or mad they are will depend on how the bite feels.... little ones? feels abit like being up against velcro. big ones? hmmmm I had blood drawn once but it was like being picked super quick with a sewing pin. Not painful really just more shocking is all :) I used to be soooooo scared of getting bitten.... til I got some babies in and that is All they did!! lol didnt take me long to get over that fear... I dont even worry about it anymore because I cant usually feel too much unless I see them do it. (so more visual shock than hurting )
