How to freeze freshly killed?

Hi...

I will be getting a batch of live mice, and euthanizing them using CO2. hopefully it'll go well, would feel horrible if they suffered more than neccessary.
The question is, what method do i use for freezing them? I was planning to pack them in ziplock baggies once dead and just put them in the freezer. But i've heard that they might turn out weirdly shaped thus making feeding hard? Any good method to recommend?? Any sanitory(sp?) guidelines to take note of? Advice much appreciated.

I freeze mine in ziplock bags, and they do come out of the freezer in funny shapes, but I de-frost in warm water and they become plyable just like a fresh mouse.

I like to lay mine out straight on an old cookie sheet and freeze them separated. That way, when they are put in a ziplock bag, they don't freeze stuck to each other and they aren't all weird looking.

I freeze separately, like CornCrazy. The result is neater looking, and the mice don't stick together. Most importantly, the mice freeze quicker if separate than if packed together, so the final product is fresher.

thanks for the info guys. Corncrazy and paulh, i dont really get what do you guys mean when you say "freeze seperately". Do you mean that you pack them into ziplock only AFTER they're frozen, and you freeze them apart?

Cheers,
Jin

Yes...lay them out in a row without letting them touch. Freeze them, and then package them up.

If you have one of those styrofoam meat trays (that you buy your meat in at the supermarket) you can just lay your mice on there and put the tray itself into a plastic bag and put the whole thing into the freezer. You can use a dish too, but I like the trays because they are pretty space efficient.

I do what CornCrazy does..

I've tried just throwing them in a plastic bag, and they end up weird shapes and stuck to each other. Sometimes the shapes aren't too bad, but when you're bending them back into shape, they tend to rupture more often. Not my cup of tea. =P

I just freeze them separately on an old cookie sheet, laid out with legs all going down the body, for a streamlined mouse. After a day to make sure they're frozen solid, I package them up in a Ziplock and they're good to go. =)
