If you live in a cold area of the country, (anything north of Dixie) it has been my experience that snakes will have some shedding problems in the winter when the air is so dry. This year I put a humidifier (actually a vaporizor) in my snake room, and it pumps about 2 quarts of water per day into the room. No more shedding problems since I started doing this and I don't have to mess with wet hides and the like. It took a few days for the room to soak up all of the moisture into the wood and other furniture, and I was surprised at how much the moisture migrates out of the room. So it really is not overly humid in the room with the door shut, just about the same level as in the summer time here in Missouri. So one vaporizer in one room of a house is a good way to improve the humidity in the whole house and to keep your snakes healthier.
