How to...Thermometer probes?/UTH stickyness

Ok, so here is a good question:

How can I possibly attach a thermometer probe to the inside of a glass tank so that it is
1. removable for cleaning
2. not involving tape of any kind

Any good ideas?

Also, while I am asking questions....what can you stick to the backside of a UTH that will not burn so that you can also safely remove it from the tank when cleaning? My UTH's have sticky backsides and I took off the paper (woe is me!), so I have to manually remove them every time I clean the tanks (because it involves water). I know that this can destroy the pads, so I wonder what I can stick on them that is safe so that I can simply tape them on the tank.

Thanks for any ideas!

I have a few tanks with the UTH permanantly attached and just clean them by hand with caution.

if you put the Uth on the bottom shouldnt have to take it off for cleaning, i just unplug mine and move it to where ever im cleaning. you dont really need to clean the outside or the bottom of the tank.

for the probe, you can use a suction cup, most come with one, or just put it on the bottom cover it up sith aspen or whatever you are using and it will pretty muc stay put

Yes, mine come with suction cups but they don't stick very well and my ball likes to un-stick my suctions cups all the time lol!

I am such a sloppy cleaner, because I do my cleaning in my bathtub, where everything gets wet. Any cleaning suggestions to make this easier? Everything gets wet when I clean unfortunately. I was thinking about buying chlorhexadine, but I am not sure if that is something you have to rise out as well. It would be nice to find a cleaner that didn't involve rinsing with water.

Rachel - you can take silicone and put down a 1/4 inch high blob every 6-8 inches or so. Wet your finger and shape it a bit, smoothing and rounding it out some. After it thoroughly dries, take a razor blade and carefully slit the blob mostly down to the glass. Now the wire for the thermometer probe goes in the cut and will be held in place. Or you can silicone the suction cups in place.

it shouldnt matter much if the suction cup comes un done, unless your ball is plaing with the probe it will pretty much stay place and give you good readings.

To clean my tank i just empty out the substrate by dumping it upside down in a trash bad, help if you have two people. To clean it out i spray whatever the cleaner i have, then at the kitchen sink, i tip it on its side put about a 1/2 inch of water to cover the whole area, then flip it back right side up, i take a paper towel and swash the water around, clean the sides then dump the water back out and repeat. i guess it all depends on how strong u are and the size of your tank, mines a 20L so is not to hard to manuver around, but it would be easy to drop it. Only way i can think how to do it with out moving the UTH all the time.

The silicone idea sounds good....I am mainly concerned as my cleaning process is thorough but messy, and my back gives way part way through with my twenty gallon long haha. Good ideas! Thank you guys!

i stick tin foil to my uth too.. and for the probe, i use a tiny bit of sticky wall tack things found at office supplies stores and such, works really well and u can always safely remove it without leaving a mark or anything like that :D

I stuck my UTH's to heat-resistant plexiglass/lexan (so that I can use them with larger viv's at a later date). With a thermometer or rheostat the uth will never get hot enough to melt the plexi which melts at temps of something like 800 degrees Fahrenheit, I think.
