howlong should you wait for second corn?

atmox

Addict!
Okay, I'm addicted... I've got my first corn for 5 weeks now and i LOVE it!!
Searching around for morphs i discovered a butter stripe and i think they are the most beautiful morph out there (together with snow stripe and fire stripe that is). How long do you think i should wait to get another corn? should i get more experience with my amel before getting a second one or doesn't it matter? Are there things i should keep in mind wen getting a second snake?
Only downside the vivs are expensive, if i wait to next year i can use the smaller vivs where my current corn is in..
So what do you guys think??

I've had my corn for just about a year now and i'm getting another snake this weekend (not a corn but that's not the point). As long as you have the time and money to support 2 corns, then go for it... You know how to house, heat, feed, and take general care for one, so adding another isn't going to be that much harder... always remember not to house them together though. As for getting a different breed, I'd wait and get a little more experience... I hope you find what you're looking for!!

thanks, I'm not planning to keep only corns but i know i need more experience first. I'm planning to get them is this order: Corn snake > ball python > boa > and maybe if i have the space and time a Burmese python

for the butter stripe where i talked about maybe I'll get it next month when i turn 18, would be a nice birthday gift :crazy01:

giving yourself a birthday present is always fun :D
IMO, ball pythons look weird... too big around for how short they are, but that's personal just preference... This weekend, i'm getting an Orange Hog Island Boa!!! i'm pumped
I loved Butters though, stripes look great added to it :)

I always think, wait 6 months to a year before getting your second snake.
This allows you to gain experience and to really think, is this for me. To many people jump and getting a bunch of snakes in the very beginning and then decide to get rid of them shortly. I have seen it here at this site and at many others.
So take your time and read up and gain plenty of experience with your first animal before buying another.

Easier said than done, I've found :).

Well, one year in, look at my signature! I'm having a blast. I'm cooling some adults for pairings in 2011. I can see that it's possible I won't add much more, or might trade for snakes I wanted more, but I can't see getting rid of them unless I become so poor I am living in my CAR.

They give me so much pleasure. They aren't demanding like a cat or a dog, but almost all of them seem to be happy enough to be handled, they LOVE to eat which makes feeding fun, they don't bother me when I've had a bad day. Pretty nearly the perfect pet if you ask me!

Tricksterpup has a point.

However...I've had Sienna for 5 weeks and am going to pick up corn snake #2 this Sunday! I am sooooo excited. But I've loved snakes for years and have taken care of them before. I want to have two. That way I can alternate their feeding schedule so one snake is always available for play time. :)

Whatever you are comfortable with. The main thing is making sure it is within your budget to get a full set-up for another. I have seen too many people come to where I work that their first snake is set-up perfect but the second one they wanted just so bad they only got the minimum of basics for the second, and it got sick. So I waited almost a year until I got my second one. I probably would have waited longer but $60 dollars on CL for a full set up with an anery motley hatchling was too good for me to pass up!

I have had mine for all most 7 weeks. And I plan on getting another snake a week from sunday. Just do not forget to keep your snakes in different rooms for 3-6 months in case the new one is sick

How long you should wait is all on YOU.

Some people only wait a week, a month, or some similarly short period of time and do well with it. At least two such people already posted here. (Though it should be noted others do this same and come to regret it.)

Then you have people who wait a long time. They may wait 6 months, they may wait a year, they may even wait several years. I'm one of those who waited a year before getting my second snake, because that was the best route for me.

If you feel as though you can take on a second snake now, have all the resources necessary, and are doing well with your first snake, then go ahead. If you aren't prepared, don't feel like you can do a second one, or your first is doing poorly, then wait a while before you double the commitment.

I got my 1st 4/06, 2nd 10/06, 3rd and 4th 9/07,
Now I'm at 100 and more coming soon..
You have to know your limits/capabilities..
I have tried many different kinds of snakes too..

I got my first two (one is mine and the other is my boyfriends) in September.
I've been trying to hold off but I've been talking to a plasma breeder - so it's VERY hard to resist.

I know if I saw some beautiful pink coral snows... I'd CAVE!

Until you have proper housing, food, and ability to care for it for its life span, properly.
