I live in Southern California, it's pretty warm here in the summer. Lately it's been abnormally warm. I've noticed that Vicious, my young corn, doesn't even use his hide anymore since it's located above the heater. Whenever I find him he's burrowed in the aspen on the opposite side of the heater. Is it safe to assume I do not need my heater on? It's an undertank heater, one of the cheaper ones, so it doesn't have a dial to change the temperature with. Thanks =)

I wish I knew. I have a thermometer on the hot side, but I can never read it. It's one of those digital ones I guess. I've been thinking about it, maybe I'll just get him a hide for the cool side too. Maybe some day he'll need that heat and if it's not there, he won't be too happy =P
How hard can it possibly be to read a "digital" thermometer..?
Dual hide..onefor each side of the temperature gradient..are definitely a good idea. My corn seems "happy" too, but I'd rather leave her the option to make her own choices..rather than rely upon my untrained perceptions of exactly what a corn snake finds makes them 'happy'...

I think Radio Shack has some $8 - $10 or so thermometers with probes. They are designed to put the probe end outside your window. But you could put the main gauge on top of your cage and stick the probe in the hot hide box for a few days. Then over on the cool side. Check temps during different times of the day and night. Check it for a few days at the beginning of each month so you will see it get warmer or cooler as the seasons change.
Or you could just get a cheap wall version at Wal Mart and stick it in your hide box for a few days, then on the cool side. Just keep checking temps whenever anything changes (like your room temp in each season, esp. if you suddenly turn the a/c or heat on or off).
