How many people who don't themselves do it are going to mentally assemble the following into a mouse euthanasia rig:
1. CO2 canister (welding gear or paintball rig)
2. Tupperware tub with holes in
3. Assorted aquarium tubing
Heck, you only really need the first two... and if you prefer, you could even make do with a bit more of number 2 and none of the rest at all, if you wanted to use the slightly less precise and slightly more dangerous vinegar-and-baking-soda method. And then your vinegar and bicarb could stay in the kitchen except when you're using it.

yea, that site has a little more info than needed for most RE CO2 system. I keep mine under my kitchen sink. I use a disposable glad tupperware. I cut an "X" into the top. (small x just big enough to stick a pen into). I thread the airline tubing into that. Then, I take a (2) small 3 ounce bathroom cups and fill them with vinegar and put them in a sandwich bag with baking soda at the bottom. (you have to experiment with the amounts or measure) Mouse goes in Tupperware and the other end of the airline tube goes in the bag. I always keep on hand on the ziplock to make sure it is tight around the tube.Then, carefully spill the vinegar. Go slow at first and be carefull not to get a reaction thats gets out of control. Do this in the bathroom. If your reaction gets to big, you will have to let the bag open so your reaction doesn't travel through the airline tubing. I think quart size ziplocks worked best for me.

Homemade Euthanization Chamber

Very interesting thread. We tried to think of a way we could be a bit more humane when it comes to culling food items other then whacking them on the head or cervical dislocation with the handle of a butter knife. So, this is what we came up with. Our daughter's boyfriend is into paintball and had an idea using his CO2 canister. We went to Home Depot and purchased 2 1/2' of 6" pvc pipe, 1 end cap, 1 screw on end cap, 1 two way valve and some pvc cement. Brandon (daughter's boyfriend) already had the canister, the remote tubing and the connecting valve. Assembly was very simple. Use the appropriate size drill bit to make holes in the end caps to accept the 2 way valve and the remote connecting valve. The screw on end cap is a little different as it has a cube in the center, to allow for secure tightening with pliers and make a good seal, and is a little thicker then the regular end cap. The screw on end cap will receive the remote tube connector and the solid end cap will receive the two way valve. The two way valve is used to allow for the air to escape while filling it with CO2 and releasing it when the deed is done (1-2 minutes, you will know when it is over). When you start to see the CO2 coming out of the valve, about 2-3 seconds, close it and then open it when it is over. Cement the valves into the end caps and then the end caps onto either end of the pvc and wait to dry. *Use adequate ventilation when using pvc cement and CO2!* This project was very simple to make, took about an hour to build, and the cost was reasonable as well. If you had to purchase everything including the CO2 for the tank it should be under $100.00. We chose to make it this size as it allows us to euthanize 2-3 large rats at a time as well as a bunch of mice or smaller rats if needed and allows us to store everthing inside the tube. Obviously you could make it almost any size you wanted. Here are a few pictures to give you some ideas on how to make one. Thanks for looking and I hope this helped.

Actually freezing would be very painful to the animal. Every cell in the animals body is crystallized until it dies and becomes frozen. Think of what it would feel like if you froze to death. I don't think it would be very pleasant and without pain. I had a slight case of frost bite in my toes years ago and I will say it is very painful. JMO

I just got home from work. On the way home I picked up a CO2 canister (paintball). I'll use CO2 from now on . And by the way, I do not think drowning is humane. I just tried it once to see if it was, and trust me, it's not. I am going to a reptile show on june 10th, so it's possible that I will have more mouths to feed. I know that it isn't practical to breed mice for just one snake (sorry cornflakes!) and normally, I buy frozen. But I plan on bringing home a few more corns from the show :crazy02:. So I wanted to experiment with culling methods. Once Cornflakes is big enough to eat adults (or multiple pinks, since pinks are easier to digest)... that'll add up over time. And that's just him. I plan on buying more, so breeding mice makes much more sense financially. :cheers:

i am breeding for just 1 snake at the moment but am getting at least 2 more very soon so i will be able to get a stock up. my gas arrived today. i do not use the paintballing things. you can get small c02 cylinders for pumping bike tyres up. for the initial kit and 8 cylinders it cost me 14 pounds. and this will kill at least 80 mice. now thats not bad compared to what i have been paying over here. if i go into breeding mice large scale ( supply local shop as they have no suppliers) i will buy a paintball cylinder as it is cheaper in the long run for mass culling.
