I've done a search and haven't found a single thread that says what sort of humidity levels you should have. I found LOTS that say "watch the humidity level" or something of that nature but never one that said "humidity should be around 80% for a cornsnake" or "I keep my humidity about 60%".

Since I had a problem with my last shed, I've covered up 90% of the top of my tank screen, added a MUCH bigger water bowl and added a hydrometer to monitor it. What I don't know is what % the humidity should be at.

Can anyone tell me please?

Looks like buddy's starting to shed again and I'd like to avoid it being a 2 week process again.
 
I don't know what it actually is supposed to be. I just put a humid hide in with my difficult shedders.
 
It should probably be around 50-60% for corns. When their eyes start to glaze over, I usually spray their tank with a spray bottle a couple times a day to boost the humidity a little. If it's really humid, like 80-90%, they could get blisters. :)
 
just one thing - you say you are covering 90% of the lid... are you covering the vent holes as well? i dont think that would be very clever if you are.........
Humidity wise, i find that having a second water bowl, positioned over the heat mat, releases enough vapour into the air to keep my snake happy... its been like this since the beginning of the year and she has shed easily every time. Not sure of actual percentage figures but you want it to be humid without being damp.... such an exact science :eek:
 
There are no vent holes to cover as I'm using an old fish aquarium as my Vivarium. Also, although the top is mostly covered, there is still a spot about 2"x14" that's left open for air to get in, so that's not an issue.

On the up side, Buddy shed yesterday just fine without any help and in one piece so I guess the humidity is just fine. Just for reference, my humidity is at about 70%.
 
I usually only raise the humidity to around 60% once my snake goes "blue"
Afterwards, I let it go back down to room humidity.
 
I've also been warned to be careful about raising the humidity too high or for too long because corns are prone to resp infections and high humidities would not be good. Not sure on that one though as I haven't managed to find any literature to back that up. If I have a problem shedder I put in a humid hide (like corncrazy) - moist paper towels in an old ice cream carton and pop it in the warm side of the tank.
 
I never raise the humidity for my corns, but i do raise it for when my ball python goes into shed. All i o is put a 2nd water bowl over the heatmat and that does the trick. Hope this helps:)

Whenever my snake gets in the blue phase (We've had 2 whopping sheds so far, so i have plenty experience hehehe) I let him crawl through moistened pieces of papertowel when i handle him. Of course, he doesn't freak out when i handle him in the blue phase !! I hear that some snakes do.
