is the hurricane trait another genetic pattern? like stripes and motleys? or is it kind of an accident?

is this a hurricane motley?

The hurricane pattern is when there is an additional thick "ring" around the circles. Check out the photo gallery at http://www.cornsnake.NET and you will see several fine examples of Hurricane motleys.

i've looked at photos, but i'm honestly still having a hard time telling the difference. would you say the photo above is just a motley and not a hurricane then? it was sold to me as a hurricane.

Here's a zoomed-in and lightened version of the picture you posted. In this picture, I see signs of the hurricane effect --especially where the snake bends back on itself. It's much easier to tell in person than from a picture.

Here are a couple pictures of the hurricane pattern in a hypo motley that really shows the dark coloration about the circles, distinct from the rest of the saddle color.

Here are a few examples that don't show the hurricane effect, but are still motleys.
