New corn owner. 1yr old classic or normal (are there different terminology between USA & Uk) named by children - zing zing, great temperament, seems great with kids (ages 6 & 7).

We wash hands before & after handling - how strict do I need to be ?

do I need to clean other surfaces the snake has visited ?

Viv - how often do I change bedding ? (removing poo on a daily basis)

Yes. As strict as you need to be so it gets done.

Not something I've ever done myself. Can't see the need as long as it's not plates you're going to eat from or something. Obvious exception being anything the snake decides to poop on while it's out and about ....

Every 4-8 weeks is fine as long as your spot cleaning is good.

See above. If you're doing the bedding you're as well to do the tank at the same time.

What detergents do I use ?

I've always used stuff called 'Vetaclean' which I buy from the same place I get my feeder mice. Other people use a heavily diluted bleach/water solution (not sure of the ratio - I'm sure others will advise - and make sure it's well rinsed down if using bleach)

I wash hands using arkvet/vetark handwash (can't remember which way round ark n vet are lol) it's a gel like handwash you get in a bottle just squirt it on and rub it in, not harmful to any animals and no water required so you can just use it anywhere and i do this before, between and after handling.

Bedding, if you use loose substrate poo pick daily and then do a full clean with something like vetaclean/trigene which you can buy in a spray or a bottle to mix up yourself which i do and just spray & wipe those areas removing any urine etc that's on the viv floor.

So pretty much the same as colin, if you can't find the stuff easily PM me and i'll link you to the site i get my stuff from

Yeah, called Arklens, by Vetark, its a small company in Winchester, my mum works there, free stuff for me! I use it all the time its good stuff.

The owner is a exotic animal vet too which is handy.

A bleach solution was mentioned for cleaning the viv. I've read that 10% bleach solution will do the job. As long as it is thoroughly rinsed after and doesn't smell of bleach once dry.

A good number of corn keepers clean their vivs with chlorhexadine solution - this is sold under the trade name "Nolvasan", and is not toxic to the animals when ingested. It's sold as a concentrate, and while it goes for about $30 a gallon, it dilutes to about 2 tablespoons of the concentrate to a gallon of water. I just started using it this past summer, and I now swear by it.

Ever since getting sick from some unknown thing, I've been a lot more strict with myself about hygiene after snakes and rodents than ever before.

I'm washing my hands with an anti-microbial soap I picked up at our local pharmacy, called Provon. It's made by Gojo.

It contains 0.3% chloroxylenol, which the doctor said was sufficient to kill most anything. It smells like the "green soap" the school nurse used to use on you when you'd get a scrape or a cut. But eh, so long as it works I'm ok.

I clean my tubs out typically with a 50/50 isopropyl alcohol-water mixture or a 50/50 Petzyme-water mix (alcohol and enzymes). I can't seem to find chlorhexadine locally, and shipping for a gallon would be rediculous.

I couldn't find it locally myself, so I talked to my herp vet, who ordered it for me. Piece of cake.

Hrm. Well the drive to my herp vet is 20 miles, but maybe the local vet who sees my mammalian critters could order me some. Thanks for the thought. =)

Thanks, jazz. I have heard some comments about that before, but haven't tried it. I may just have to look into it. :cheers:
