I was wondering about the liklihood of a leopard rat snake and a corn snake being able to reproduce with each other? I know pythons from different continents can reproduce eg the Ball and the Burmese, however these are both of the same genus and were separated more recently in history I assume. Yet the corn and other north american snakes are termed 'rat snakes' just like European and Asian species...which were only recently classified as separate from each other eg elaphe and orthriophis.
You'd assume members of the saem geus would have more liklihood of being able to crossbreed with each other than those from separate genuses but as I have found this isnt always the case. I read the rainbow boa is actually more closely related to anacondas (with which it has been hybridised with) than to other members of its genus...however both of those live a lot closer to each other than a north american snake and a european one.
