I finally caught one this year.

First things first, zero luck last night!. I woke up this morning and the pinkie was stationed across from him. A little discouraging, but I still have hope. As for using a LIVE pinkie, I don't have any Live mice, and I'm not quite sure where to get them?. Thanks for the advice, though, and it's definitely something worth looking into. I'm going to try switching the feeding position up in a few different ways, and if that doesn't work I'll go from there, but my hope is that eventually he'll break down and eat. Part of me still thinks he's so young that he's living off of his reserves, because sometimes babies won't eat anything in their first month of life, but the problem with that is that I don't know his age, and also it gets colder out by the day so I'm afraid to wait that long. Either way, thanks for the advice, and I'm going to search online now and see if their is any stories online about other people having any successful techniques. As always, I will definitely keep you posted, and thanks again for another link. I really appreciate it!.

wow, ricky and cobra kai, i'm going to have to go out to the woods near my boyfriends house (in north andover, mass) to find some garters!! He said he has seen a few while out walking the dog... but your find gives me hope of finding one for myself!!! it may be too cold now, though... grrr.

congrats on a nice find! and ricky, good luck with getting the little guy to eat!

Looks like the Pit Bull in those photos wants to have a go at the snake!
He is no match for Shaolin snake style.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted in a few days, but I've been a little under the weather. I'm sorry to say it, but I have officially released the baby Milk Snake. I did it yesterday while the weather was still good, because I was having zero success with the feeding. I tried every idea under the sun, including catching a frog and rubbing a pinkie against it for the scent (don't worry, no frogs were remotely harmed in this process), but even that had no effect whatsoever. I do wish it could have worked out, but I was really in a race against time, and I knew the weather would only be on my side for a few more days. Yesterday was my deadline, and I had no choice, but to release him. The good thing, though, is that I released him a happy and healthy snake, and he should have a great chance of finding a meal in the wild. It's not the exact outcome I was looking for, but he was in no way interested in feeding, and I couldn't risk holding on to him any longer.
Cobra Kai, I really appreciate all your help through this process, and I would have loved to have been able to show you the progression of the baby Milk Snake, but it just wasn't meant to happen, I guess. I'm still going to try to learn more about their feeding habits incase I come across another Milk Snake, and hopefully next time I will have more success. Good luck to all of you who are trying one last chance at finding snakes this season, and I hope you post with all of your stories!.

Nice garter, I've got a young one that was 5 inches when I got it at the very end of August and now its 10 inches. I'm amazed how fast it grew. It eats like a champ too, what ever I offer it, guppies, worms, minnows, even pinkies which are suposed to be tricky to get garters to each I guess. Great little snakes, altough I've seem some REALLY big ones ha.

Nice catch :) The only thing I saw was outside a giftshop at a cavern site and it was a Copperhead hatchling. I declined to catch it. I was amazed at how mellow it was. Never once coiled or offered to strike, but I didn't tempt fate.

Hey Ricky,

Sorry you’re not feeling well. I’m not feeling so well myself after watching the Red Sox game. :puke01:

That’s too bad about the milk. But you did the right thing. The weather is going to be very nice this week. Just think, where there’s one baby, there’s more. I’m sure you’ll come across her family someday. Mannnn…I would be psyched if I new milk snakes live on my property. I’m thrilled with just garters let alone a snake like that. Thanks for keeping us posted. There’s always next season. I hope we won’t be saying that about the Sox. LOL!

Wow! It grew 5 inches in less than 2 months? That's awesome.

That's cool. I've never come across a copperhead. I guess that's a good thing. :sidestep:

Your telling me, you should've seem how shocked I was, it shed 3 times not even 2 weeks apart. I think its because they have a much faster metabolism then other snakes, I have to feed think little guy every 3-4 days (although he'd probably eat every day if I let him)

Hey Cobra, thanks for the support. It was tough letting him go, but I think it was the right thing to do. My first thought is that it will be fun finding him, or his relatives, again and it's great theirs some sort of population of them around. This may sound stupid, but one thing I don't get is how they can find each other to breed when I have such a tough time ever seeing one. Also, much condolences about your Red Sox. I'm not much of a baseball person (I know, dangerous to admit when I live in New England), but I still can sympathize about the loss. Especially the way it happened. I do think, though, that the Red Sox will win the series, I just think that the Rays are a bit better than people think. I'm also not a die hard Pat's fan either, though I do watch every game, but I think they are the team thats in real trouble. I thought they should have gone after Daunte Culpepper while they had the chance, and now their stuck with Matt Cassell. I think its funny, because when the question was "who's more responsible for the Pat's success; Tom Brady or Bill Bellichick?", most New Englanders said Bellichick. I don't think they think that anymore, though!. One local team I do love is the Celtics. I can't wait for the NBA season to startup. I'm not sure if you love basketball, too, but if you do I'm sure you love the Celtics as well?. Either way, good luck with the Red Sox, and I'll be pulling for you!.

The Red Sox lost again.:crying:New England has become spoiled. We're not used to this. Ricky, you're right about Tom and I'm a Celtics fan too. I admit, I did lose interest in the Celts for about 20 years. LOL! But they are HOT now. We just need to do something about the Bruins.

New England is definitely spoiled with champions, but the Red Sox still have a good chance. Game 5 will be very important, and though I'm making this sound easier than it is, if they win the pressure is on the Rays. Once a team makes it a 3-2 series, it puts alot of pressure on the team thats leading to prevent a game 7, especially against a team with a recent history of historic comebacks. As for the Celtics, they are the best team in the NBA, followed by the Hornets, in my opinion. Kevin Garnett is a champion to the fullest, and Paul Pierce is the level head that every championship caliber team needs. One player who I love a whole lot is Rajon Rondo. I know their was a lot of Sam Cassell fans, but the thing Rondo does better than everyone, but Chris Paul, is limit turnovers. He had a streak in the Detroit series where he gave up one turnover in 4 games. Thats just ridiculous in a game where the ball almost always finds a way to get loose. Finally, the Patriots. That game on sunday was horrific, and I have no respect for Bill Bellichick for squeezing in 4-5 plays with only :20 left on the clock and no shot to win. It had me worrying Randy Moss was going to be asked to do a needless jumpball and end up like Anquan Boldin did against the Jets. Still, though, if the Patriots defense steps up, and they use the talent they have alot better, they can make the playoffs, and who knows what can happen from that. Anyway, good luck with your Red Sox tommorrow, and I'll be pulling for you!.

Hey Cobra, congrats on the win last night. You must have had a defribilator on stand-by after that one!. I think that does bode very well for Boston, and I'm sure Tampa will be under heavy stress trying not to pull a game 7. Good luck the rest of the way, and I'm rooting for you all the way to the world series!!!.

Ohhhh…mannnnnnnnnn…game 5 was incredible. It was done in typical sox fashion. I knew people who left in the 7th inning. Can you believe that?! Serves them right. LOL! You’ve got to believe, right? Ok, let’s get ready for another ride tonight for game 7. GO SOX!!!
Thanks bro.

I had a large pregnant female hanging around my place this summer. She always knew when I was watching her and was always amazed by her speed. Though of keeping one of the kids when I saw a few hear and there over the course of the summer. But decided to stick with my corns. All 21 of them. Nice find though and I was not aware we had an eastern rat snake. Like to see one someday.

Hi Tim,
Wow, 21 corns, that's awesome. I don't have any snakes yet. LOL! 2 box turtles though. Yeah...come to find out the rat snake is on the protected species list in MA. I think I'll have an easier time finding an eastern milk snake in these parts. Until then I'll have lots of fun with the garters.

Yeah the garters are fun. But I do stick to the little ones though. The BIG ones do drop stink bombs. One of my corns a couple weeks ago pooped on my shoulder. I smelt it first but was to late. I have washed the sweater twice but it still has the smell. So it is know my snake sweater. lol
TTYL Tim
