Sorry for the crappy pics, but he wasn't staying still. It is amazing how much of a "hood" these guys can produce. He is getting quite an attitude. This is what he was doing for about an hour before I reached up by the cage to move something and then he "hooded" up and was ready to fight.

Cool little guy! What kinda snake is he?.

LOL, sorry, I forgot to mention that. He's a Western Hognose and while I knew they are mildly venomous (rear fang, but not prone to bite at all, all show and even if you are bit you might, MIGHT get some swelling if you had let it chew on you for a long time), I never knew they could "hood" their necks to that extent. I think it is just the flattening like the corns and rats do, but it really gives it a hooded appearance on these guys. He doesnt' bite though, he gives the bluffs and will headbutt me, but has never tried to bite or an open mouth strike. Just has spunk, lol.

Wow, I've _never_ seen a Western hood up like that! Does he hiss, too? My Eastern is very aggravated now and strikes all the time- but with her mouth closed. I liken it to a chicken pecking. Or she'll just take a swing at me with her whole head. I think it takes quite a bit to get a hoggy to that point- in Addy's case five months of abcess treatment...Well, your guy is just too adorable!

I used to not like hoggies. Then again, I used to not like beer, either. Cute little dude!

Nanci - hope Addy is getting closer to 'all better'!

Nice looking hognose! When I first saw the title of the post I was like "umm..okay...if that's what you really want..lol"...Wow though..I want one of those now just to scare my boyfriend..lol...

Nanci -- just a quick loud hiss with each "strike". Nothing that is like a long warning. My blood python sounds like Darth Vader breathing, but this guy just silently stares you down.

Thanks for all the comments. I am looking forward to this guy growing up, hopefully the 'tude will get lost along the way.

You know the videos of Sid? Addy sounds like that- she hisses when she breathes out _and_ when she breathes in! And she will go on and on and on. She especially does it when she is in her hide, and can't see me yet.

LOL, you gotta admire their spunk!

Nanci, can you post the link to the video you posted in the past of her hooding? I think it was you?! Thanks!

That had to be one of the funniest videos I've ever seen! lol..I loveee the song by the way!! and man that little guy can run..lol..I really think after seeing that video that there should be a roller coaster called "Hognose" or something...cause I felt like I was on one..but all in honesty..he is a really cool looking snake! :0)

My new camera has anti-shake technology...The newest videos from that camera are those of Olivia the toad.

I was watching a lot of The Shield when I made that- that's where the song comes from.

She can really flatten out. I would like to have an eastern but they are indigenous to Ohio so you have to get special permits to keep them.

they are rear fanged, so they carry a mild venom. The worse usually for a human bite is swelling, some say it is worse than others, but it doesn't seem like much. And that only can happen when they chew on you. They gotta get your finger or whatever way into the back of their mouths and the hang on for quite awhile. Really there is nothing to worry about because eventhough you see them hooding on here, they do alot of fake outs and rarely, if ever, try to bite.

Nanci --- video not working on my computer due to problems, I'll check it out on my daugthers computer after she leaves for school in the morning (she tends to "hood" up when I get on her computer. And the venom there usually leaves a headache and a bad attitude for both of us, lol).

Thanks for that coincidence, I was just reading about these when I was looking at the Virginia Herpetological Society website, not 2 days ago!
