i just got...

norbert03

norbert and aelfric
an albino snow corn and i felt like i was given insufficient information from the store i bought him at and i am having difficulty coming across books to help me. he seems to be doing well...he eats a pinky about twice a week. he already shed once, it seems to have been a good shed, nothing appeared left over when i examined him. he spends a lot of time under his water bowl or inside his cave, but when i handle him he is very alert and quick. he has tried to bite me once, but it was my own dumb fault. i have him in a ten gallon tank which i think is fine for now because he is a baby. i have a 75 watt bulb for the day as well as a night glo lamp. i'm not sure if he needs ones for night, but i got it anyway because my room gets quite cold and i thought perhaps that had something to due with my last snakes untimely death (a western ribbon). is there any advice anyone can give? i am new to this and want norbert to live because he cost me an arm and a leg...hopefully when he grows up he won't cost me anoother arm and leg. i realize that i can probably find good info just from browsing around this site...and so i will do that now. thanks.

First off congratulations on your new snake. They're very interesting animals.

You might want to read this thread to get some basic information and you will also find some links to books that will provide good keeper information for Corns there as well.

Cheers,
Jason

I also recommend the CSM. It answered a lot (and probably all) of my questions. Also, about the lamps, I heard they're good for lizards because they like dry enviorments but snakes don't. I had a couple of lamps until I heard that they're not all that great for snakes. I just returned them and bought a UTH. A UTH is also a bunch cheaper than lamps and it's cheaper to operate.

I have both because my tank temp was so low, my snake never left her hider cave with the UTH in it. My house is kept relatively cool, so the temps in the viv rarely got above 65 degrees. With the lamp pointed directly down at a basking rock, the opposite wall is about 76 degrees. She now comes out every evening as soon as the heat lamp goes off (I have it timed for 7am-7pm) and she hangs out on the rock, and generally cruises for about an hour or until the viv cools too much. Then she goes back in her hide cave. The UTH is in half of a large hider cave, so she can choose a cooler or warmer side to lay in.

first of all u should get rid of the lamp, lamps cost money for maintenence and theres no use for them. Lamps also cause the snakes to be stressed out. get a under tank heating pad and take the light away and ull be all set.
