i might be allergic to mice? can i swich to something esle?

the mighty mouse hunter

:dancer: oh these little things are starting to look like Great snake food:spinner:

The hunt lasted 5 min little thing got out of the top of the feeding bin. there in a new cage now locked up! i found her a foot away in my Dirty wash. in a box.

I'm sorry about your problem with the mice. I thought about gerbils, and I think it was Dean who said their head might be too big for a corn snake. When I looked at them they do have a big head. Hamsters breed well, but take a while to establish colony, even harder then mice, in my experience. If you had a rat before why not do rats?
I am a nurse and used to work for a dermatologist, so you've ruled out bedding and feed, the next step would be try to stay away from the mice for a couple days (in another room if you can). If symptoms go away then it's the mice. It does seem odd you wouldn't be allergic to other rodents, but I am allergic to some cat dander but not all????? Have you tried Benadryl it's over the counter, but may make you sleepy. After listening to the doc for years it could be your hand soap, laundry soap, lotion any number of things in your enviornment causing the problem. It could even be a food you are eating. :shrugs: susang

Rather than kill them, start calling pet stores and see if someone will take them from you. I'll bet you can find them another home that way. I'll bet you can get rid of them alive today by doing that.

Tell your parents that allergies and asthma aren't something to scoff at. My husband is on meds and has an inhaler because of allergies to my mice, but he loves them, too, so he's willing to do what he needs to do. We're hoping that he can get on shots so we can have rats, too, because we know he's allergic to them as well.

Update!!

First off sadly yes all my mice had to be killed. trying to make it less painful then freezing i put them in a case and smashed them in to a wall..:smash: Right after i started cleaning and washing there cages out and now my whole room and bedsheets. Glad you are feeling better!

I look like that if I touch the rats and then touch my face, I can't imagine what I would look like if they were right next to my bed!!!!

Yeah i have some old photos of me really bad. i look something like a Fly with big eyes and then some. Am so glad am feeling better. since the mice. i got to thank them. Because my mother likes my snakes. (they don't kill me) and she now doesn't think my snakes will assassin me in my sleep. lol (my mom really used to hate my snakes) but now with her change of hart. she said i can get 2 new corns :) but only until i work around the house to get 2 more tanks and all that good stuff for them. so i say thank you too the mice!

You might look into african sof furred rats. I've only had mine a few weeks now but the difference in smell is amazing. I raised mice for a few months, those nasty stinking monsters were awful, their urine seemed to create a vapor that burned my eyes. It didn't matter how clean I kept them either. The softies don't bother me at all and they are cute, wild and hard to handle but worth it.

I currently have a mouse colony that is growing by leaps and bounds and I'll be splitting them tomorrow (was going to do it tonight, but too tired). I also have a soft furred rat one too. The mice I ended up with 1.1 after the alpha female killed the other 2 females and let me tell you even before the first and second litter, those 2 mice stunk more than the 1.3 soft furred rats I have. They don't smell, they are the perfect prey items so far, although I am waiting for babies so I can try feeding my snakes, so as long as they eat them, I will be happy to eventually switch everything from boas to corns to the softies. They are super cute and the ones I have are very tame, can be handled and you only get nipped if you stick your finger in front of their face and leave it there. I have seen a difference with the one female who has become pregnant though, she is much more skittish then she used to be and I have heard they are very defensive once little ones get in there. Also, their fur is the softest I think I have ever felt in a rodent. I would give them a try if you are looking for something different that might not affect allegeries. After all, the worse that could happen is you need to cull them off too. Maybe if you find them in a pet store, try to handle them for a little and then wait and see if symptons develop. good luck
