so compare a 60 macro agaist a 24-70 f2.8:
Original Price 57,000 yen against 220,000 yen (one piont for the ef-s 60)
Maximum Magnifcation (x) 1 against 0,3 (one piont for the ef-s 60)
Weight (g) 335 against 950 (one piont for the ef-s 60)
MTF at F4 2108 against 1867 (one piont for the ef-s 60)
so tell me, why should I pay 4 times of the price, carry 3 times of the weight loosing my macro funktion just to lose some resolution???

Daniel, look at the wonderfull pics and stop telling people things, that they simply don't want to hear. As soon as 30 novices on a board tell you, that you make wonderfull photos - you are clearly an expert and you know everything better than other people publishing excellent pictures in books.

...just a little P.S. cause I'm quite sure that there will be some arguing. Putting a cornsnake on a blue screen, using two flashlight and trying 20 times a day is one thing - taking wildlife pictures with a good depth-of-field under hard circumstances is another one. So maybe the "cornsnake-wonderfull-picture" community should think twice, if they follow the instructions of some point-and-shoot photographers or people taking such pictures:

I can see where the 70-200 2.8 L/IS is totally useless... NOT... A point you forgot to make about the EF-S is that it's useless if and when you go full frame, so you may have wasted money on it in the long run... I'll give it to you that you can get closer using a Macro, but to say that my lens are useless is pretty much BS as these pics show. All taken with the 70-200 and varying aperatures. f/11 and f/4

a cheap 100$ cam would be enough!

you loose resolution if you would use the 24-70, not if you would use the ef-s!!! the cheaper lens is the better one .... probably you don´t know how to read MTF charts.

the point of the superior glass is indeet small and totally useless in this case.

a ef-s is not for FF, but do I need FF to make good pic´s? and whats about the 70-200 if you change from FF to I don´t know how you call this middle format cameras???

buy a 60mm lens and a few snakes
work a day with your 70-200 and the next day with the 60 and you will chance your opinion and know what I mean!
100mm with crop 1.6 is too much - especially for adult snakes.
you need to be close enough to keep them under control.
if you can´t reach them with your hands your time to make good pics is simply shorter!
you also could work with 100mm but it will be a harder work for you.
also your internal flash might be not strong enough to handle the situation.
for hatchlings 100mm is ok.
