I scared him accidentally

My cornsnake will be 3 years of age next month (May 1, 2026). He is nearly 5 feet long. His name is Sandy and he is an orange & red patternless.
A couple of nights ago, I got up, walked over to his vivarium without the room lights on. Only the light from the hallway came into the room. He was on top of his hide cave, so I unlock his enclosure and reach in to handle him. He went berserk, made numerous strikes at me and rattled his tail. I withdrew my hand quickly and he repeatedly kept striking the glass. I was so scared that he would hurt himself but luckily he stopped and slowly went into his warm hide. Apparently, he cannot ID me in near-darkness, and I thought that the smell of my hand and arm would be recognizable, but I guessed wrong. In the morning, he was okay, calm as ever, gentle and mild-mannered. But I'll never do that again. I felt so bad :(
