I think my CRB has an RI!! Help!

BabyMowgli

just one more....
So I was checking on everyone today and picked up my new columbian rainbow boa. I noticed bubbles around her nose and mouth. Is this the start of an RI? What can I do for her? We do NOT HAVE ONE reptile vet in our area. please respond asap if you have any suggestions!

Not one? To me it sounds like an RI - I would act fast, do some research and look in the yellow pages for an exotic pet clinic to bring your snake in to. There has to be one, as i'm sure your not the only one who owns snakes in your area :).

That sounds like an RI.

First i'd isolate that snake from the rest of your collection, then i'd raise the temps by a few degrees, i'd also think about getting it to the vet soon for some antibiotics

All the best,

Tom

Also, you may want to turn the heat up a bit, that's probably what triggered the RI, are the temps right in the cage? Now I don't know much about rainbow boas, if not at all, but still - RI's are very serious.

i read somewhere that you should drop the humidity when they have an RI and raise the temps too. but rainbows are supposed to always have access to a humid hide, which is where she spends most of her time. Should I take the humid hide out?? Temps right now are about 92 warm side

I would think so - it may stress the snake, but it's good intentions so i wouldn't waste another minute thinking about taking my snake in or not to a vet clinic that's at least an hour away. When my python had RI, the closest exotic pet clinic was thirty minutes away and she made the ride just fine. Of course, I put her in a sealed, dark container with various ventilation holes and just let her sit in that for the ride.

:shrugs: Then again, i'm no RI professional, i'm just going on about what I would do in the situation - and antibiotics are for the best, so i'm sure your snake could last an hour ride.

thanks, I'll make some calls.

anyone know about the humidity thing? do I take it out of leave it in. she is out of that hide now, laying between the glass and her water bowl.

For now I would say take it out. Humidity is the last thing she needs right now..the warmer she is the better ...I wish you much luck :0(

Brianna what city do you live in?
We might be able to find you a closer vet.
Next, keep your snake away from your others. When you handle it, wash your hands and change your shirt before working with your others. I would keep hand sanitizer around for this reason. But I would keep this snake in a separate room. Boost up the heat for this guy. Typically MN winters are bad for boas and their cages do get cold.
From the sounds of this though, you need a vet. Again, which city do you live in and maybe I can help find you a closer vet.

I am in Fisher, MN. right on the edge of the ND state line. I am guessing that Fargo is the closest vet. I took the humid hide out and she is hiding under the log on the warm side.

Brianna,
Sorry to say but you are correct. The nearest herp vet to you is in Fargo.

There are not many in these northern states, we have a bunch here in the twin cities but non near you.

Here is a good link for any others needing a herp vet.

I agree fully with the advice already given - raise temps and keep well away from your other snakes.

I am very fond of CRBs. I hope your little guy makes a speedy recovery.
