ok i looked around more. do you think its possible an eastern hognose. they are supposed to be a ny species according to http://www.esf.edu/pubprog/brochure/snakes/snakes.htm, and i looked up more pictures and found some resembling the one i found. it was also flattening out its head cobra like when i was handling it. it was only a small one. thanks for any help guys

It's definitely not a hognose, but the pics are too small for me to tell what it is. I'd have guessed something like a garter, but it's so sandy-colored...

i thought that too, but its head is not shaped like that at all. it was a broad head. but it had no rattles, and didnt look like a copperhead. is there any way for a rattler to not have rattles. cause it was small. length i would say under 2 feet.

ok. i know its late. but i just got home. but we have it planned that tomorrow is herping day. not matter what this is. its gonna be a lifer if i can get a positive id on it. im taking a camera and a pillowcase and a field guide. hoping to not use the pillow case but will do if needed. thanks for the help. its been a good 4th weekend so far. hoping for better since the rain stopped. hopefully it didnt move far, we found it out near the swamps, but a mile east near the old garbage dump site we call the heath. its under a piece of ply wood. when i found it there was a shed under with it and all. so hopefully tomorrow itll still be there.
