I'm starting to think that Jack is a Jackie

I have been wondering for a while now whether Jack really is a boy. At first it was because of his size he's longer than 4 foot(his tank is 4 foot long and he is longer when he zooms along the glass) and quite wide, but this doesnt prove anything.

So today after finding that he had shed I decided to scale count. Firstly vent to tail tip which was 69 pairs (close)

Then chin to vent - vent to tail tip which was 159.

Upon reading this thread http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61035&highlight=scale+counting

It suggests that Jack is a girl.

Not that I mind as I have a lovely charcoal male. But my sister is not too pleased as for the last 3 nearly 4 years she thought she had a boy

Do you have pics of the snake? Some good vent/ tail pics. We can try to guess, from tail shape which is not 100% accurate. the scale count thing is not 100% accurate either... Or get Jack probed. Otherwise unless you plan to try breeding them just enjoy the snake, male or female doesn't matter that much in a pet.

Yeah I understand that its not a great way of telling, which is why I tried both ways of scale counting. I do have some pics but they are about a year old now. Do need to get some more recent ones

I just counted my Blizzard 'boy' and i was never told his sex, so i just guessed...
and I keep counting from a zoomed in picture 69 - 71. So that's a very iffy range right there. Lol.

oh, but i just remembered that when he was little, a bad shed caused him to lose the tip of his tail so maybe the actual count should really be around 73? :p

I can hope, right? lol

I'd say scale counting is a tool to use as an estimate for sexing, but I wouldn't say it is 100% reliable. Here is a quote from the thread you mentioned.

"It states that a females subcaudal scale count is between 59 and 70 pairs and a males is between 70 and 80 pairs."

I would suggest that the closer you get to 70 pairs, the less and less accurate this becomes.
