Info needed – White lipped Tree Viper

Hi everyone.

Just wondering if anyone on the forum keeps / has kept white lipped tree vipers. I'm looking at getting one in the year coming and any info will be greatly appreciated. My mind still isn't made up though, just in the research phase. You can even dissuade me if necessary. hehe

I just looked them up and it looks like a very beautiful animal but I was just wondering why you what a venomnous snake. Other wise looks really cool.

I know that there is someone that is a member here breeds various hots. I don't think that is on his list but he may know someone that does. I am just trying to remember who it is.

You would be amazed how many people keep hots (venomus snakes) I personally do not have guts for it. Otherwise I would have a few rattlesnakes.

I'm with Christen. Venomous can be cool, I just don't have the intestinal fortitude for it. I'll leave that to the people with the right knowledge and habitat. I sure do like to look at them, though. I've got a friend out here in Texas that has nothing BUT venomous snakes, and has for about 25 years.

My reason for it is 2 fold.

1. They look amazing.
2. It will be a 'display snake'. Don't get me wrong, I like my other snakes but they spend life in their hides. I want something for the lounge.

My other options is an ATB. Not venemous which is good. But also not as nice looking. Still beautiful snakes. Emeralds are out because of the cost.

Speaking of cost - Here's something interesting about snake prices in South Africa and the accessibility of Hots vs fangless snakes. (R+Rand, our currency)

Fangless
ATB - R1 000 to R1 800
ETB - R5 000 upward
BCI - R750 upward
Ball Python - R800 upward
Corns - R150 upward

Hots -
White lipped tree vipers - R300 upward
gaboon vipers - R800 up
Copperheads - R500 upward

Here the hot snakes are more accessible financially than most colubrids or boas or pythons.

P.S. After doing some more reading up I see that there's no antivenom for the tree vipers. Though people aren't dying from bites you can still easily lose a digit or something. Not sure how keen I am anymore. ATB may be a better choice.
