Initial viv setup: question re. heat

I'm going to be getting a corn soonish, but only after I get everything working properly. For now I'm using a 10 gallon tank with a screen top. I've put plastic over most of the screen to keep the humidity up, but the heating doesn't seem to be working out for me.
I have a 8x8 exo terra 8W UTH under the left side. On the glass in the middle of the heat mat it's 97F, above the aspen in the same spot it's 83, but over on the oppose side on top of the aspen its about 70F.
From what I've read this range of heat is probably too wide, especially for a baby corn. Should I get a bigger UTH with an added rheostat to distribute the heat better but keep the hottest spot lower?

Ok, to start 97 is way to hot. You run the risk of your snake burning itself when it goes digging. You need to bring that down. If you got a UTH that was ment for a 10 gallon you are fine. Snakes need to be able to change their body temp and they do that by moving from one side of the tank to the other. The warm side should be 80 to 85 but I know that mine ranges from 80 to 90 but never over 90 or under 80. The cool side should be 70 to 75. Mine never goes under 69. This is how the snakes keep themselves going. You need to have the temp change on the two sides.

Where is the water bowl?

The 10g will only last a snake until it is about a year and then it would have to be moved into a larger tank. Just keep that in mind.

The water bowl is on the way. I've done most of the purchasing for this through ebay.

The UTH is meant for 10 gallon tanks so I thought it should be fine, but my concern is that if I get a rheostat to reduce the 97 the cold side might get too cold.
Then again it can't go below room temperature so that should be ok.

i don't think the UTH really effects the cold side at all... so as long as you regulate the UTH on the warm side, i think you should be fine?

What is room temp? If you feel it's to cold you can move the snake or try warming the room up but remember that you need to have a warm side and a cool side for the snake. If the UTH is for a 10g then you are fine with it and you don't need another one you just need to control the temp.

Thank you for taking the time to find out what is wrong with your viv before putting your snake into it. Your snake is going to live a long and happy life I am sure. Do you know what kind of corn you are getting?

The room temp usually varies from 69-74F, although it has gone down to 64. I tested dropping the room temp down that low and the viv didn't get too low.
I'll probably go for a zoo med 500R, or what seems to be a rebranded BAH-1000, on ebay to keep those hot temps down a bit.

I'm pretty set on a bloodred corn, or an anerythristic B depending on what the pet shops can order. Ordering a corn online still seems a little risky to me, even though I know that many people here have done it without a hitch.

No problem!

Bloodreds are amazing looking. I have been thinking of adding one to my growing need of corns. I know that ordering online might seem risky but thats how I got my little one. I'm sure if you looked around you could find a member on this site that has a bloodred and could work something out with you.

Just a thought.

I look forward to seeing your new corn!!

if you have thermometers like those little round ones you got on the bottom...

is that how your supposed to put those?

Well when you think about it you're just adding a middle man, the snake is still getting shipped it's just getting shipped to the petstore :shrugs:

You want them to be able to read the temp on top of the aspen as well as under. One with a probe works best because it helps you guide the UTH better.

Heh, no, I've already moved them up onto the back wall. That was just to compare the analog temp readings to my digital thermometers without sticking them on permanently.

It does add a middleman, but it also adds their guarantee. If anything went wrong in shipping they'd be the ones footing the bill. It would depend on the breeder, but if it were shipped directly to me I'd probably lose at least the shipping cost if anything went wrong.
That said I've asked my prefered pet shop in town and they didn't sound too optimistic about getting much at all.

Well if you ordered from a good breeder if something like that happens they often compensate you.
You've just gotta find a good breeder....there are plenty here :D

All right, you've convinced me. I'll put a want ad up here once I hear back from my local inquiries. :D

To be honest if you just started going through some threads you'll find links to their sites and you can check to see what they have. You never know you might find someone close to you that has just what you are looking for!
