Interesting DIY Cage Build, Your Thoughts?

Interesting. I like how easy it would be to assemble, and how light weight it would be. I am currently building some of my own enclosures. You need to incorporate ventilation, heat, light, substrate, hides, etc. You might need something more substantial for the floor of the cage, and a dam for the substrate. Solid white may be just what you want, but I prefer a natural setting. I guess you could paint the inside with paint made for plastics? Up to you. Keep us updated as you build. We all like to see that stuff!

That's looks like a good plan. I had been looking for cheap, lightweight DIY cages and found one that used some kind of foam board insulation. After researching it, it looked like the foam board wouldn't be good because the heated UTH could cause foam toxins to be released... or something.

Anyway, I looked up the polypropylene the Coroplast is made from and it's a safe plastic for heating (in a microwave at least). So I guess as long as it's a heat-safe material, I think that cage is a great idea. If you end up making one, be sure to post some details!

I'd love to start, but I haven't found anywhere to get 2x2 pvc boards. I actually work in a big box store selling millwork, and none of my suppliers carry it.

What I do carry isn't cheap. I'm beginning to wonder if DIY is really worth it these days. It seems no matter which route I take, I'm 2/3 of the price of a commercial cage just in materials alone.

Here are two videos I found that had good plans. I think they both use the foam board that might not be good to use, but if you're handy, I'm sure you could frankenstein several ideas into one great enclosure.

I suppose my point in posting these is to suggesting using wood. :p

As for your other concern, DIY may not cost less, but you can get the cage you want: size, weight, sturdiness, etc. Might be worth paying the same as a manufactured cage that's not quite what you're looking for.

These are the display cages I built with my grandpa for my red tail boas, corn, and rosy boa I had at the time. My new babies should be big enough to move into them in a couple years. Each compartment is 2ft by 3ft or 4ft, I forget. Really easy to make, I designed and drew the plands for them myself.
