INTRODUCING, APOLLO

Ex Snakephobian
I wrote a thread a little over a week ago about a new snake we got. He was local at a pet rescue place and my sister and I adopted him. He had been injured.. Here is the thread I made about how he came into our possession:

http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113087

Anyway, last Thursday he finally came out of his hide and tried to shed. He managed most of it himself but couldn't get the bit off near his healed wound so my sister and I had to "help" him.

We took a few photos of him since he finally came out of his hidey after a week and was shedding. After the shed we picked him up for the first time since I brought him home and I was actually able to finally get a good look at him.

You can plainly see where his wound was.. it's kind of caved in on the sides and pushed up into a knot on top of his spine. I had asked the woman at the animal rescue what happened to him. She said she thinks the people he used to belong to had stepped on him or closed him into a door.. and she didn't know if it was an accident or some kid being rough and cruel..or even adults for that matter.

It upset me a lot to hear about how he possibly got his wound.. it was pretty bad and I was pleasantly surprised that he actually recovered from the injury enough that he is still able to move his tail etc.. and he can still curl up into a tight coil when he wants to. It surprised me that he wasn't actually paralyzed from the injury down.

Below I have some photos posted of him. You will see one photo where there is a white larger circle and then a smaller circle within the larger one. The injury was awful just by judging how the bones healed.. It makes me cringe every time I see it. I can also hear a little popping sometimes when I have held him.. and boy does that make me feel awful so I am very delicate holding him.. my sister is too.. both of us are afraid we might hurt him. I mean we have no idea if he is even still feeling pain over it.

We are having trouble feeding him. He won't eat and I am concerned about it because I can actually feel his ribs pretty well.. so I am hoping he will eat for us very soon. The woman at the rescue place said he ate pretty well but wouldn't take anything bigger than fuzzies. I am not sure why but maybe to do with his injury and things passing through that dented in area.

He's a bit over four feet long and not sure how much he weighs because he's so big and I don't have a scale big enough to weigh him.. in which I will remedy soon.

Anyway.. here are the photos. Notice the one with the white circles.. the photos show the un-shed skin we later took off after the photos.

He's a handsome boy and has such a sweet face. I would bet that his injury doesn't hurt him anymore, but it's always good to be careful. He already looks much better than he did in the other thread. That shed made a ton of difference.

I wouldn't worry that he hasn't eaten yet. Sheds can be stressful, as can moving. He's probably just a little overwhelmed.

You seem to be doing great though! Keep us updated! :D

He's a big, handsome fellow! Aside from the injury, he looks pretty healthy. Here's hoping he lives a long, pain-free life in your care.

Thank you Guys... Some great new though.. he ate a fuzzy earlier.. and my sister and I were so happy to see that. YAY

Thanks Heather. I am looking forward to the two girls coming when the weather cools. Then I will have 5 corns. Think that will be just enough LOL
