The pet store agreed to replace Orpheus and, though I was still feeling very badly about him, I thought that this little girl was just beautiful (no popping or probing done- sexed by sight for naming purposes only). My temperature is being watched very closely and I've switched to aspen bedding instead of carpet.
Let me tell you, though. I had the most awful time with Aquatic Life in Stuart. Apparently the mortality rate for their pets is 20%. I don't know if that's normal or high, but it's very sad the 20 out of 100 of their animals die and the owner is so nonchalant about it. He said that Orpheus's death would be a good lesson for me as a pet owner and was originally not going to replace him or give any repayment at all. Of course, there is no replacement. But I think the owner (Tom) should have at least behaved more compassionately.
My father ended up going in to talk to the guy and at -that- point Tom agreed to at least replace my Motley with a "regular" corn snake. Of course, she's beautiful and will live a long and happy life here. she's a twelve-inch-or-so hatchling who is very active and loves to climb.
I'm sure that Orpheus would want me to move on and give Hestia the happy life I was gonna give him.
Sorry that this post is the length of a novel. I just had to yell about Tom at Aquatic Life, though he eventually started understanding that this animal was not just a 20% statistic. He was a pet. Grr.
Here's some pictures, anyway!
