Introducing Hestia and Insensitive Aquatic Life Owner.

The pet store agreed to replace Orpheus and, though I was still feeling very badly about him, I thought that this little girl was just beautiful (no popping or probing done- sexed by sight for naming purposes only). My temperature is being watched very closely and I've switched to aspen bedding instead of carpet.

Let me tell you, though. I had the most awful time with Aquatic Life in Stuart. Apparently the mortality rate for their pets is 20%. I don't know if that's normal or high, but it's very sad the 20 out of 100 of their animals die and the owner is so nonchalant about it. He said that Orpheus's death would be a good lesson for me as a pet owner and was originally not going to replace him or give any repayment at all. Of course, there is no replacement. But I think the owner (Tom) should have at least behaved more compassionately.

My father ended up going in to talk to the guy and at -that- point Tom agreed to at least replace my Motley with a "regular" corn snake. Of course, she's beautiful and will live a long and happy life here. she's a twelve-inch-or-so hatchling who is very active and loves to climb. :D I'm sure that Orpheus would want me to move on and give Hestia the happy life I was gonna give him.

Sorry that this post is the length of a novel. I just had to yell about Tom at Aquatic Life, though he eventually started understanding that this animal was not just a 20% statistic. He was a pet. Grr.

Here's some pictures, anyway!

20% mortality rate seems pretty high to me..

Also, that guy is a complete jerk. He should have been obligated to replace your pet. Most stores I buy from actually have a warranty on the animals.

Anyway, I'm sorry about Orpheus, and I hope Hestia lives a long life for you.

Good lesson to stay away from that shop from now on, maybe! What a loser- I will never stop in if I'm down that way. I wonder if this warrants a post on the Board of Inquiry- I would surely want to know about a shop like that before buying anything there.

But at least you have a new beautiful girl.

If he thinks a 20% mortality rate is normal, he's smoking crack. That's absurdly high. It's not realistic. And he's talking about mammals as well as reptiles? If his customers lose that many puppies, kittens, birds, snakes, etc. then he needs to be shut down. With that kind of a death rate, I would be reporting him to the local human society or law enforcement (whichever handles animal abuse/cruelty) because he is out of line and in need of investigating.

Hestia is lovely and I'm glad your dad helped you out, but that store really needs to shape up their act. For a start 20% mortality rate is not acceptable and to tell someone that a newly-purchased pet died is a 'good lesson' is unspeakably insensitive, especially after the store have admitted that they sold you an unhealthy animal.
Perhaps for the sake of Orpheus, the other pets that will pass through there and other people who will buy their pets there, you would consider reporting this place to the authorities.

The store sells reptiles, amphibians, and fish, which do not seem to be protected nearly as well as mammals for some reason. Though now that I know that this sort of horrible caretaking is in no way normal, I'll definitely proceed to inform others about this place. I definitely don't want anyone else give business to these people and encouraging this kind of business!

Thank you for the compliment, too. :D I will tell her that you think she's pretty. <3 It certainly seemed that the man did not understand what loss is like, or he just loses so many animals that he is awfully desensitized!

I will move on in seeking the proper authorities to report this too.

Thank you all for your support and advice!

She's lovely and I'm glad you got a replacement. With fish it's not unusual to lose 20% especially with saltwater/tropical aquaria. However to say that the death of your beautiful pet is a good lesson is horrible!! I definitely would stay away from them from now on!

She's a pretty girl and I agree that you should be able to report the guy to someone :( BBB won't take it since he grudgely replaced the animal when your dad stepped in (yeeeeeeeeeeah dad).

I'm glad you couldn't stay away. Snakes really are cool pets.. can't say they are the coolest as I would have to say horses are... but snakes are a lot cheaper, unless you get bit by the must have every morph bug :) I only want a couple :D

Oh, I absolutely couldn't stay away. I've always loved snakes and it was just recently that my mother got over her fear of them and allowed me to bring one into the family. After watching Orpheus and Hestia for a bit, she's beginning to think they're cute. ^^ Mission accomplished!

What a cad! I think it was a good lesson--a good lession to stay away from that store!

I'm glad you got another snake, and she is a beauty.

Nah, mission is accomplished is when she starts calling your snake her snake and you have to make her buy her own :D

Haha I don't see that happening. If it did, though, I'd be like, "Whoa my mom transformed somehow! Rockin'!" I think she'll stick with watching mine, though, ha. :D

Never say never.... I wanted absolutely NOTHING, I mean nothing to do with snakes when my daughter talked me into buying her a snake for her 13th birthday. Three months later I was spending a small fortune (to me considering I wasn't working at the time) on a hatchling at Tinley Park from Kathy Love.

Now, I'm more snakey than my daughter :D

So there is always hope :)

Ahhh her friends must think you're so cool! That's awesome. That way you can really make sure she's giving her snake the proper care, too. Good for you!

Sounds like he is the one who needs a lesson - both in animal husbandry and in people skills! I respect you for not getting hopping mad to his face because I'm not sure I would have been so calm.

Congrats on the snake! He's a sweetie :)

Hey Meg, can you figure out what morph this snake is?? Sami's a friend of mine, and for the life of me I can't figure it out. It looks like a hypo of sorts, but with black eyes??

Meg,

The pictures are at the top of this thread. I didn't know there was any question that this was a normal.... I must have missed something somewhere....

Looks like a normal. Hard to tell if it's hypo or not although usually the eyes are lighter colored. The checkering looks fairly dark. Do you have clearer pictures of the body? It's hard to see the saddle markings in the pictures. I've seen lots of normals that have reduced black in their patterns though, so it's not really a true indication. No matter what, she's a pretty one, and I'd go with that! I personally love normals. I have 5 in my collection.
