Hi there! I'm brand new to corn snakes (and snakes in general), and am getting my first one, a male, on Thursday. His name was Xavier, but we're changing it to Naga, which is Sanskrit for 'snake'. Here's a pic:

My experience is limited to the very few people that I know that own snakes, and the few times that I've handled them. We've got some common snakes 'round here, all non-poisonous, and it's a given that at least 4 times a summer, one of my two sons will come to me, lugging a green snake along.

I've been doing my research on care, etc. Naga comes with a full set up, so there's not likely to be much that I'll need to get for him. Apparently he's about 1.5 years old, 3' long, eating live (!) prey, small mice from what I've been told. (I know that frozen killed prey is better... he's apparently been eating quite well on the live... let me know your opinions *grin*)

So about me... I'm 26, married with two sons (6 and 9), I own rottweilers, and will be showing a rottweiler in dog shows sometime in the near future. I'm very active in the dog world, LOL, especially in breed specific legislation and in rescue. I work as a nurse, in a nursing home, on the 'graveyard' shift (nights only). My parents hate the idea of a snake, but I don't live under their roof. :p Everyone thinks I'm a bit wacko anyway.

So that's me. In a rather large nutshell.
 
Welcome to the world of cornsnakes! :) You'll love it! Naga is very handsome and it looks like you've done your reading so you shouldn't have any problems. As for feeding live, well, sometimes the mouse manages to take a bite out of the snake before the snake kills it so I would switch to f/t if you can, just in case...
But sometimes a snake just won't go for f/t and then you just have to take your chances (my boa will only eat live :rolleyes: ).

Don't hesitate to ask any questions! People are very nice and helpfull here! :wavey:

That's unfortunate. Mine are great with people, particularly children. I'm hoping my male will be settled enough to do therapy work at a nursing home. :)

Glad to be here! It looks very knowledgable, and interesting, I've been working my way through the care sheets/FAQs.

That was my concern on the live, I understand you can feed 'stunned' live prey, but I'm not so sure about that, lmfao! I'm going to try to switch him to f/t, but if it doesn't work, back to live.

Trust me, there'll be questions. :)

(And rottweiler ROCK!)

Congrats on your first corn :D They are lots of fun and rather addicting! I am a nurse too, pediatrics mostly although currently I'm doing Diabetes education.

I'm also thought of as a wacko (as are most on this forum!) so no worries there :) My parents think I have 3 snakes when it's actually 8, but hey, they're in another country!

I got a year old snow cornsnake that was eating live. First feed and the mouse bit her about 5 times very quickly, the damage only cleared up when she shed. I changed to a brained mouse which she ate no problem, then f/t with a sliced nose, now she is happily eating f/t straight away. I know it gives people the squicks to think about whacking a mouse, but the little monsters can really hurt your snake, I've even heard of them killing snakes by biting in just the wrong place. If you don't want to do the deed yourself your supplier might do it for you.

Yeah, the idea of 'braining' the mouse freaks me a bit, but I *think* I can do it. o.0 I'm really not wanting to feed live, so I'll definitely be looking into the f/t. :) Thanks for the welcome!

Ohhh peds! I'd have loved to do maternity, but... I'm enjoying the 'enhanced care facility' (it's a nursing home, no matter what you call it!!) I particularly enjoy the young adults. We have a blast. And night shift rules! (No admin breathing down your neck, and less staff to work with!)

LoL... I know what you mean. However, night shift made me a bit psychotic... or maybe that was my ex-husband...either way, I digress.. :flames:

Braining a pinky is not a hard thing to do, especially if they are still frozen when you brain and slice them. I would caution you to remember that their skulls are quite fragile. I was a bit nervous about doing it (I can start an IV in a baby, but not brain a pinky!?! Something is not quite right about this.) and put a bit too much pressure ... bam - pinky brains all over my counter. So, ummm.... gentle.

Okay, I can deal with all kinds of weird sh*t but EWWWW.
 
Ok, still the squicky subject, but when I use the term 'braining' I mean whacking a live mouse in the head. No nice way to type that! The first time I found it surprisingly easy (that makes me sound so evil!) as it was the one that had just been chomping on my snake, plus it had got a bit messed up from being flicked across the feed box by an irate/freaked out corn snake! Was better all round to put it out of all our miseries. There's a good thread around here somewhere about making a mini-euthanasia chamber for the mice too, but if you can get f/t (I can't) you won't have to deal with any of this :puke01:
