Is a 20 tall as good as a 20 long if I build levels into it?

Old enough to know better
I have a 20 long and a 20 high, but while my corns are still small would it be okay to build levels into it to give more floor space in the 20 high? I hate to get rid of a perfectly good tank, but if the 20 high is useless for corns I will get rid of it.

Second question, if I do go with the levels, will the white coated particle board (used for shelving and comes in all size pieces) be healthy for a corn?

I hope you don't mean corns as in co-habitating, that's just bad mojo no matter what the size is. If it's a single small corn at a time though, it should be more than sufficient ground space. Don't be surprised if they don't regularly utilize upper levels though. Each snake is different in that regard.

White coated particle board sounds like you're talking about melamine, which is commonly used in vivarium construction. Just make sure it's properly coated (you'll possibly have to iron on any exposed edges) to prevent moisture damage and you should be good to go. You could also consider styrofoam coated with some grout then a few layers of poly sealant too.

Thanks! No cohabitating, I just have one now and decided to move her into a 20L instead of her 10 gallon, then I want to get another corn or two because I have 2 more tanks to use.

Thanks for the tips on this project, I wasn't sure melamine would be good for a corn or not.

Thanks!

AS Nathian mentioned, it depends on the snake. Most of mine are ground-dwellers, but there is one that REFUSES to stay on the ground. I put him in a 20 tall and he loves it.

There are a lot of nice products for arboreal geckos that might be handy, especially the bendable vines and magnetic ledges. Melamine finished particle board seems a really bad idea to me - it often gets sharp/rough edges, the melamine can peel easily, and it's really heavy if it falls. Lots of gecko folks have also had luck using the insulation tubing used to cover hot water pipes; it is dirt cheap, easy to clean, easy to cut to size, and simple to hot glue to the glass. Criss cross lengths of it in your tank and your snake can climb all over, and you can cut open the the interior space to allow them to crawl inside the tubing as well - pretty cool...

20 gal tall is fine and as you know it won't last you forever. I have a 20 gal tall all I say about that is be very careful of the lid. I had my milk in it for a couple years and yet something happened and the locks somehow popped off and my milk got out. :( I think my cat did it because he usuall sleeps being the tank. I don't know if I would put layers in it. I just put lots of dangly plants and my snake loved it. However if you are set on layer you can use melamine. I have a melamine board in my 100 gal as a divider. ;)
