Is a 40gal tall tank ok for a baby?

I know a small tank would be much better...but a friend is selling a 40 gallon tank that has the taller sides that seems so perfect for an adult for only $40 (by zilla tanks). That seems like a steal...but will a baby corn be comfortable there? What if I give it lots of hides? Seems like this size would be great with some nice driftwood. Would it need more than a uth? a lamp too?? I really want to avoid the lamp if possible because it is for my 10 year old son...and I don't want the firehazard. thanks for any advice. Maybe just get it and put it in the attic for later?

A UTH regulated by a thermostat covering 1/3 of the base is all that you'd need for heat. It's certainly a big tank, but with lots hides and possibly some vines, your little one should be okay :)

It is great for a baby snake. 3 or 4 hides, and you are set for the life of the snake.

I always put my baby snakes in the enclosure they will spend their lives in if I can.

The footprint is what really matters. If it is tall, then it probably has a footprint comparable to a 20 ot 10 gallon.

The main thing I would worry about is making it escape proof.

I just noticed you said it had the tall sides. 40 gallon breeders are wonderful, I have not seen a 40 tall. Still, it will be fine for the little one.

i tend to go by a simple rule

length + width of a tank = corn snake no bigger

eg

3ft + 2ft = 5ft corn snake, no bigger

so for a 6 ft snake you would have 4ft by 2ft, or 3 ft by 3ft

height ought to be at least a third of its length also
