can i use an under tank heater, or do i need a light, (the story is i have a 10g with one but might jus put them in a 29g/20 long with a light, adn when would i have to upgrade the snake out of the 10

I'd move the snake out the ten gallon as soon as the other is ready. Most people here use heat mats because they are cheaper, last longer and are safer. If you do use a light, make sure it is well guarded as they can cause serious burns. If you use a mat again make sure the snake cannot lie directly on top of it.

Well a heat mat inside the tank is not a big problem. These mats don't heat up as much as heat rocks do. I have a small 7W mat inside my tank and my corn loves it. The mat is only very mildly warm so no risks for burns.
I do however use a light to get temps up during the day.
As Neil said get a bigger tank soon.

I use a heat mat and a light juring the day, thats all they really need. Just try to keep the temp at around 75-85 degrees.

On the same sort of question, are heat mats placed under the tank, on the outside, safe to be against wood, say on a wooden stand for the viv?

I have mine inside the tank. It really depends on the strength of the heat mat. Think about it, placing it under the tank or at a wall can stop the heat transfer. Especially when placing underneath the tank you can get a heatjam. That means the heat cannot go up because the bottom of the tank stops it and it cannot go down. This can lead to overheating of the mat and into a technical fault. If the mat does not go really hot but more merely warm place it inside the tank.

I use a heatcable in my big tank which I built myself. It's placed underneath the tankfloor in a sandlayer. The top is then covered with tiles that allow a good transfer but stop the snake from burrowing down to the cable and tangle it up. The cable are a bit safer than mats but can burn through when crossed.

there is definetly a lot about how to place heating in terreriums on the web available. Just search a bit if you are unsure about how to place these things.
