I am trying to set up a good heat pad to a thermostat, i got alot of input but i am having trouble finding the right type so i hope you can tell me if this will work! Doesn't have a probe though. And im also getting a heat pad but i was reading another thread here, and i was wondering, i dont know anymore, am i supposed to raise the tank the side of the heat pad, will it burn when it is not raised!?

After looking at the picture of the thermostat, I would recommend against buying it. Like you said, it does not have a temperature 'probe'. It appears that the unit will turn on/off according to a temperature that can be set by the user, via the dial in the middle. However, it lacks an external probe. I believe this thermostat measures the temperature on the upper right side, where the slits are located. So it essentially only will measure the ambient temperature of where the unit is located (unless you can somehow cut the slits and extend the temperature probe/sensor beneath or place the thermostat inside of your viv, upsidedown, above the heat pad--which may not work because the cord of the heat pad plugs into that side, and I would not recommend doing this because of this electrical equipment being inside with your snake).

I personally use rheostats, which are cheaper when you only have a few setups. Here's what I use:

Dimmer/Rheostat

Basically plug your heat pad into this rheostat, then into the wall. The cord is long/extended so that the dimmer control has about 6' of reach from the wall plug. Then just use trial and error until you get the desired temperature of the heat pad using any thermometer (with probe). Occasionally, you may have to adjust it depending on your home's inside temperature, but not often. I pay about $10 for these in the store at Lowe's and Home Depot.

As far as elevating the tank/leaving room underneath, I do recommend this. This allows airflow and can prevent marring on some surfaces and preserves some heat pads from over heating. I do not think it is really needed, but better safe than sorry. Hope this helps.

I would go with the 1000w as its just a couple cents more. I actually just ordered one yesterday. I probably wont use all that wattage with one snake. But either one of those will work, I have heard of people on here that have either one or the other, the 1000w can just control more wattage.

7 males to one female rat, How's that working out?

lol. I volunteer for a birds of prey rehab center. All 8 rats are pets but the female is a breeder, who I only breed once in a while. Her young ones are food for the big birds. After two more breedings, she is retired and I may spay her and put her in with the boys, dont know yet how that will work out, lol.

I wouls suggest you going with the zoomed unit.. The thermostats that are round on top are pretty crappy... The ZM's are not the best in the world but are better than a dimmer.. The round top units will NOT handle 1000 watts.. Well they may for about a day an hour or whatever.. Just not safe in my PERSONAL opinion... A dimmer is actually safer than those "round tops stats". But like mentioned above you have to monitor them several times a day to make sure they are in the right temps and hope they dont spike when your out or asleep....
