when was his last shed?? i really couldnt tell you i knew what it was, but my best guess would be a scar from a bad shed
 
or... does he bite at anyone often? could be an issue of him snapping at someone and for some reason he didnt release instantaneously and the bitee pulled their hand away real fast and caused damage. it happens.

From that pic, it looks like he could have a bit of mouth rot. It's possible that it is an abscess, as well. If you don't want to make a trip to the vet, you can try treating it at home for a bit to see if you can get it better. I recommend taking the substrate out of his tank and putting him on paper towels. You should get some Nolvasan (2% chlorhexidine solution)

Most farm supply stores carry it. You can also check with your local veterinarian(s) to see if they will sell you a small amount. If you can't find it locally, then you should go ahead and order it so you will have it on hand for future problems. You will want to dilute the Nolvasan (1 part Nolvasan to 20 parts water). Clean the area really well with the dilute solution. I personally use new eye shadow applicators to swab areas like that (q-tips leave too much cotton fiber). You can clean it several times a day. You do not have to rinse the Nolvasan off of your snake.

You will also want to bump up your temps a bit in order to speed healing. If at any time, the wound looks worse or if it is not getting better after a couple of days, tehn you should take him to the vet.
 
Newb question, but if it may be mouth rot, would you have to decrease humidity as well?

Especially Terri. I will be doing all these today. What exactly causes mouth rot & will you need to continually watch for it? It's never been a problem in the past that's why I'm asking.

Normally mouth rot is not a problem snakes should get. Rot is not like a fungus, it's an infection. Many times it is a husbandry issue. I would not increase humidity. Keep it at a normal rate. I might also stress that if the mouthrot does not appear to improve with treatment you'll want to get into a vet. Mouth rot can lead to respiratory infections and in worst case scenarios, bone infections. It seems to respond well to cleaning as Terri suggested with Nolvasan as well as weak betadine solutions or even diluted listerine.
 
I will do so. I've never had any problems with him but I don't know if it was moving cross country & into a diffrent climate. I got the treatment last night & turned up the heat a bit in his cage. Isn't one of the signs of mouth rot that they won't eat? Because he as usual is eating like a champ. I just want to make sure my husbandry is up to par so this will never happen again.

If it's not too bad they may continue to eat. As it progresses though, they will be unable to do so.
 
Does he rub his face against the top of his cage? This could be casued from that as well. Also you should qurintine him from any other snakes.
 
Just in case it is mouth rot, i heard a story about ball pythons and mouth rot and wouldnt want to risk any other snakes. Thats why you should qurintine. Sorry for the doulble post I forgot to explain my self.
