Probably a stupid question, but my snake ate his pinky tail-end first. Can they distinguish between each end? I was wondering if that might hurt him; He was 'lazy' for a lot longer than usual... so, yeah.

You have yourself what is fondly referred to as a "ButtMuncher" there. Don't worry about it. As Fenderplayer108 said, its normal.

I have 3 snakes...1(my MBK) is a prime feeder, always taking her prey head first. 1(the corn) is a sometimes butt-muncher, where she will occasionally take her food the wrong way. She just gets in a hurry. And 1(florida king) that is the quintessential buttmuncher. She always takes her food tail first. Don't really know why, but it is of no consequence, really. As long as the food goes down and stays down...it's all good.

I've found it more common in my less avid eaters. Perhaps a snake who's not got that killer instinct just doesn't seem to care what end she eats first.
By avid eater I'm talking about the kind of snake that will passionately fallow a F/T mouse you wave in front of it and aggressively constrict it if you give it a little giggle.

That's ironic, because I find just the opposite to be true. My MBK, who always eats heads first, is the pickiest of my feeders, the only one that will occasionally refuse a meal, and the only one that never seems to get excited enough to constrict.

My Florida King, the "chronic buttmuncher", is my most aggressive feeder, who never refuses a meal, will often take any refused meals from the other snakes, almost always aggressively constricts her f/t prey, and simply doesn't seem to care which end she eats first, so long as she is eating.

I don't let mine eat the tail first... I normally hold the fuzzy in chopsticks with the head staring her in the face, so she chomps that bit.

lol @ buttmuncher.... we used that as an insult when I was in school (8-12 years old or so)

I found that term to be hilarious... my cousin has always called me 'buttmunch' since I can remember. When I told her she couldn't stop laughing... it was horrible.

if you think butteaters are strange...

My fiancee called me once to ask what he should do about a little ball python I was nursing for a local petstore, it had decided in it's enthusiasm that the middle was a good place to start and had apparently broken its back and was having a heck of a time swallowing it...she did end up eating it rite side middle first, getting it down, keeping it down....I also am the proud owner of the worlds clumsiest python....sendari hunts like a champ, strikes with light speed, constricts violently...only to grip his prey until it decides to casually escape...if he'd eat frozen more enthusiastically id make him eat them all the time just to spare myself the guilt of watching him strain himself. :wavey:
