Is this set-up sufficient?

Cool Kid
I have two hides, one on the cool side, and one on the warm side. I have a climbing stick for him, a hygrometer, a thermostat, coconut husk bedding, and a water dish on the cool side. It's a 10 gal tank, big enough for now. I have a heating pad underneath, on the right side.

Is there anything I should add/remove, or change around? Thanks in advance!

The first thing I would do is get rid of that thermometer that you have, and get a digital probe thermometer. I use this model of an Acurite thermometer. They're $12 at Wal-Mart.

Second, I'm not quite sure how secure your Corn will feel in those hides. The skull should be OK, but I know a lot of snakes don't feel comfortable in those half logs. What I use is really cheap and easy (and easy to clean). I use socks that have a toilet paper roll inside to hold the sock open. (you can see an example here. I apologize for the bad picture, but it's the best I could do.) That usually works very well for the first year or so of their lives. :)

Other than that, it looks good. :)

Okay, great. Thanks. Should I get two thermometers, or just one? And I've noticed he really doesn't hang out in his log that much, but he loves his skull. He's always in it.

And that idea with the toilet paper and sock is pretty neat. I think I'll use that. :bird:

I use one thermometer on the hot side, but if you feel more comfortable you can use two. :)

I love it. My '07 is just now starting to outgrow his socks. I'm trying to figure out what to use now. I've almost considered knitting new ones for him. LOL

Are you knitting him a "tube sock"? lol

I love that cheap idea! And I'm sure he would love it, but he is absolutely in love with his skull.. He was actually kind of antsy when I took it out for a couple of days. As soon as I put it back in, he went right to it.

I thought about it. Just a bigger one. Maybe similar to leg warmers. LOL

My Corns all use them. I've got 3 right now, and i'm getting a few more soon. I haven't had any problems with it thus far, which makes me happy. And if they soil it, all you have to do is throw it in the washer. :)

I bought that half log, too, and I've only ever seen J in it during the summer when the house was hot and (I think) he wanted cover with air circulation. He may have been in there twice in the last year! Otherwise he LOVES his cheap, upside-down disposable paper bowl with a little door cut in the side. Whatever does it for him.

You can also throw in some toilet paper roll insides (or better, the inside cardboard roll from aluminum foil, which tends to be skinnier). And some fake plants to hide in and peer out of. Cute!

Hey, knitting is awesome! I knit/crochet everything I can. Socks? Check. Blankets? Check. Candy corn costume for my doggy? Check. Lol.

Haha - I do it off and on. I've been working on a baby blanket forever. I need to finish it soon, but that probably won't happen. LOL

I would also get something to control the warm sides heat. You say heating pad, but do you mean uth, or an actual human heating pad? A uth is preferable, but without something to control either your warm side is going to be too warm.

Yea, I have a uth on the right side. I keep it on 24/7 and all seems to be going well. (Is that okay?) After my paycheck this week I'm going to be heading out to get a thermometer like the one Suzy mentioned. I have to get a scale, as well. I haven't weighed him once since I brought him home.:dunce:

well i only read half this post but you could always use hunting socks or athletic socks because they can get pretty big, or if u have a old sweatshirt u can just cut the sleeves off and sew one side of each sleeve

The thermometer only tells you how warm the UTH is but doesn't control how hot it gets- and they all get waaay too hot. You need a thermostat to prvent it from heating up too much- what feels cozy warm to us is burning hot to them:) Big apple herps sells a decent one for under $40 check it out!!

Danielle is correct, and I absolutely cannot believe I forgot it. I'm sorry! This is the one Danielle was talking about. :) It's recommended to have something to control the heat with, because most commercial UTHs can get up to 110-120 degrees which would cook your snake.

Cheaper than a thermostat is a lamp dimmer and a digital thermometer. You will have to manually adjust the temperature, although once you find the "sweet spot", it's pretty stable unless the ambient temp swings dramatically. That you can get for $20-25 total. Plug-in lamp dimmers are around $10 at home depot, and digital thermometers run about $10-12 at pet retail places.

I forgot to mention I took out that half-log hide, and put in a paper towel tube with half of it buried under the substrate, and he loves it! He's always in his tube, now. I love when his little head comes up to the glass at the end of the tube. :crazy02: Too cute.
