It's my "snake-mom" anniversary!

I just realized yesterday that today would be the anniversary of bringing home my first snakes! So I thought I'd do a little update on my scale-family.

A year after acquiring my first two corns I am still as obsessed as ever, and still learning new things constantly. It's hard to learn from research alone when you don't know what you don't know. I have learned so much from actually having snakes that reading and researching could not have taught me. And you guys have been an amazing resource along the way. Thank you!!

I also realized that if I had only brought home one snake, it would have done it's snake thing and I would have loved it and that would have been great. I thought a snake was a snake and they were all pretty much the same. Boy was I wrong!! But because I brought home two right off the bat, I immediately learned that they are *individuals* with *personalities* and that led to me wanting more. And since they are SO easy, more is exactly what I got! It turns out that snakes are the perfect pet for me.

I'm now in love with (in a totally non-creepy and well-adjusted way ) 5 corns, one African house snake, and nearly came home with a tri-color hognose last month. After losing sleep for 3 days, the cost of that one eventually convinced me to say no. I do, however, finally feel ready for something potentially a little more bitey, but something I've wanted from the beginning:
an anaconda. :sidestep:
Just kidding!! I'm currently shopping for a 50/50 banded california kingsnake, which I chickened out on in the beginning because I wasn't ready to deal with a snake that might be trying to chew on me on a regular basis. Now it just doesn't scare me anymore.

From 0 to 7 snakes in just over a year... it's been a really fun adventure! Now I can't wait to watch them grow up and see them through their lives.

I was pretty suprised the first time someone called me the snake lady. I never realized how weird everyone would think it was that I had snakes!

The first time I got bit, I was pretty suprised, but the truth is if I hadn't seen it I wouldn't even have known that it happened. LOL. It did scare me a little at the time, but now it just doesn't anymore. I've been bitten by cats, dogs, birds, horses, and people, and none of those have stopped me so why should a bite from a small venomless snake? LOL

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Much appreciated. Here's to your second year!

Thank you DollysMom!

Lol this is true... Ima start handling her more i think im more scared than it would hurt..

The only way I was able to say no to the tricolor hog was to tell myself "not this year". I never really thought that much of them until I saw one in person, and then it was instant obsession. Definitely a must-have!

My fire is the only really moody one out of my corns. Some days she's sweet as pie and totally calm, other days she flattens out her head and rattles her tail, and she always looks at me like I'm food. It's a little weird, I don't think she realizes that she's not a king snake. Ha ha
