Jumping snakes

For an animal with no legs my corn seems to be convinced it's designed for jumping.. When I'm handling him he will often head straight off the edge of things and seems quite happy to let his body fall down behind him.

How far can a cornsnake safely fall? At the moment I'm being paranoid and keeping him from dropping any more than a couple of inches, but since snakes survive in the wild I imagine they must know best what they can cope with.

I'm not sure exactly how far a cornsnake can safely fall, but I do know they can handle a bit more than a few inches. :)

My biggest girl, Sienna, has climbed to the top of her tank (you know, on that little ledge-thing at the top of the aquarium) since she was tiny. Even in her 29 gallon she would climb to the top, and eventually fall back to the ground. Just by eye-balling it, that looks to be a 2 or 2.5 foot drop, and she's never had any problems. In fact, at 200 grams and well over 3 feet, she is still somehow managing to squish up into that little ledge (at least part of her), and still falls several times a night. Even when that big heavy weight of snake comes crashing down, she doesn't seem to be hurt at all.

I wouldn't worry too much about your little one. Chances are, he probably won't hurt himself, and he will probably stop sky diving in a few months once he mellows out. :)
 
I have a snow with an unsettling habit of acting really reallycalm, then just plain springing out of my handsd. She has been lucky thus far with her hardest drop being about 4 feet onto carpet, but she's really quite a spazz.

She's amazingly beautiful as well, so that's why I tolerate her erratic behaviour, but I pity my beautiful, calm and placid snow male when it comes breeding time. . .
