Just a question

OK, People have said that a 1.4 is good for a 10 gal. Well I have a vivarium thats a 10 gal but the lid isn't very secure, Could the mice push it open? Should I reinforce it? Would tape or 4 rocks do the trick??? Or should I just get a new cage, designed for mice?

Thanks, Butters :)

I have 1.3 in a 5 gallon but one of them is seperated in a 2,5 gallon. So In reality I have 1.2 in a 5 gallon so you should be good. Mine have beed breeding like crazy and are real healthy. All whites with red eyes.

Mice, as well as snakes, can find a way to get out if there is one.

You can get lid locks from most pet stores to hold the lid in place. I often use 12X12 marble tiles to weigh down the tops of vivs. They weigh about 7 pounds and cost about $2 from Home Depot or Lowes.

I have all whites with red eyes. I think that if you keep them all the same color they breed more because my females have in between 10-17 babies. Thats alot comparing to my friends who has cross breeds and they only have about 4 babies. Im kind of having problems with their birth cycles cause the biggest one killed 12 of the other females babies. I would suggest keeping 1 colony under 1.3 just because of that.

I've had the best production with PEWs (pink eyed whites) as well. I use small lab cages with 1.2 in each one.

I agree on the PEW, my daughter gets bigger litters then my colored ones, but I have gotten up to twelve from one mom. I am switching to PEW as feeders, simply because I get to attached to the colored ones. susang

I have 1.4 PEWS in one aquarium for now and they are at their peak age for breeding. Thats pretty much all you need for alot of pinkeys.

The only thing I do with the lid is put a stone over where the water bottle is, because mine like to climb the water bottle and I'm worried they may push it open. susang

OK awesome. Thanks. I asked my mom and she still said no... So do any of you have an idea to convince a MOM to let me start a colony I am VERY welcome.

Thanks :D

Lie to her, lol,
Its a bit too late but you shouldnt have said it was a colony for your snake. Just get them and hide them maybe? I dont know.

lol sorry, I didn't say colony... I said start breeding mice. Then she went online and found that they can breed after about 7 weeks of age... And the gestation period is like 3 weeks!!! So shes scared if 1 female gets out and its pregnant... WOW!!! lol I had to agree with her but then said they will not get out... (If I keep a good heavy rock on top to keep the lid on nice and safe, would they get out??? lol)

Thanks again. :D

ps. If I do lie (not gonna happen) And my mom looks in a closet because little squeaks are comming from it then sees 10+ mice... All hell would break lose... lol. So good idea but... :D

Well if it gets loose and has babies they wont go far and neither will she. But with a rock on top of the tank its impossible for them to get out. Theres alot more chances of your snake escaping. (You might not want to tell her that)

I've never had a mouse excape, but if one did it would worry. Mice are disructive and multiply quickly. They can nest in furniture, and eat while nesting...
That bein said as I said a stone on top prevents them getting out. susang

If your that worried about escapees why dont you buy a cover that locks shut. Thats what I have and I dont need to put any rocks on the top.
