Hi guys and gals.My name is Colby.Im enlisted in the Marine Corps.Im from Louisiana.I have always wanted to have a snake ever since I was a child. I have no experience with them but I am already learning alot from you all.I hope to learn everything that I can BEFORE I get my little guy.I want to have the perfect viv.It will have to be simple and very hideable for reasons that are kinda of funny.I live in the barracks and the only pets we can have are fish....I know I know....But I want a Corn and I'm going to have one.

I hope to learn alot here. My ears are open....Teach me:dancer:

Wow, where to start...
First, welcome to the forums, I hope you learn alot here.

Second...what you are planning on doing is a VERY VERY bad idea. I would strongly advise against it. What happens to the snake if you are caught?

I am sorry, but a good pet owner puts the welfare and care of their animals before their own selfish wants. There is plenty of time to get a snake after you leave the military....

I respect ur concerns. The rule is not really enforced. As long as you attempt to leave it out of plain sight no one will say anything. If anyone ever would happen to say something I would just have to take it out of the barracks. I have plenty of good friends that live out in town that would gladly help me out. It's not like the snake would be killed. If the animal were ever in any danger then I would not chance it.

In that case maybe you should line up at least 3 people to take the snake in case the worst should happen.

And how would you be heating the enclosure?

Well from what Ive learned so far I would use a under tank pad. I think I will start out with a 10 gal. For around 6 months or so until he is a little larger. Then I would plan on upgrading to a 30 gal. What type of overhead light should I use? I want the tank to be heated mostly by the pad. Please correct me on anything if I'm wrong.

I will be sure to have a few people lined up in the worst would happen. Thanks for the advice!

I don't think you really need an over head light. They tend to dry out the air an awful lot. The uth should be fine, as long as you have it on a dimmer switch or have a way to regulate the temp.

You ARE going to have a big problem though..........

What is the big problem that I will have? Also what what you recommend to regulate the heating pad? Again, thanks for the advice!

I have a rack system, (I currently have 35 corns, 6 rosy boas and a florida king)....so my temps are regulated a little differently, but I think you can use a dimmer switch, like you use on lamps....

As far as your problem goes....
first, you will need to choose a morph out of about 85 gazillion that cornsnakes come in....
then you should know that cornsnakes are the world's most addictive animal to own, and you have just joined a forum full of enablers.....

Hiding 1 snake might be a cakewalk....but just wait until you are trying to hide 25!!!

Well as of now I only plan to have one. I don't have the knowhow or the space to breed. Could you please post a link for a good dimmer?

The $10 plug in dimmer at Home Depot works great! That's what I have, and that's really all you need. I just walked in and said, "Excuse me, where are the plug in lamp dimmers?" :)

Welcome!

Thank you, Emily!
I have a whole wall unit thingy that my husband built for me.
I don't know my dimmers the way I know other things! :)
