hi everyone. i just bought a corn on wed. and it still wont eat... its been a week and 3 days since this month and a half old has eatin. im scared for the health of my snake and have called the store i bought it from to ask soooo many questions.. finally the lady told me just to bring him in and swap him out... but ive grown quit fond of him and dont want to let him go.... ive tried putting him in cool water for 20 min, taking him out and leaving him alone for about an hour, and then sticking him alone in a small container with the pinky... didnt work.. the temp is at 84 degrees and i have a drop light and heat pad on a 20 gallong tank.... what do i do?!?!?!?

First of all, hi and welcome to the forum

second of all, don't exchange him because the new one will likely do the same thing.

Third, why'd you give him a bath? lol

Anyway, what you're describing is normal. It's a good idea to not even handle the snake (including feeding it) for a week or 10 days when you first get it. This will give it time to settle in and not be so nervous in its new surroundings. They can go for longer than you'd think without eating and still be healthy. I'd just leave it alone for a few days.

the lady told me the snake could possibly be dehidrated so leave him in water for about 20 min... it will help him... if i freeze the pinky" thats still alive after 2 days" will he eat it after i let it thaw out in about 3 or 4 days
ive had him since wed... shouldnt that have been enough time...

The lady at the pet store sounds like a winner. Last I checked, if something was dehydrated, it needed to drink water, not bathe in it. And I'm not real sure what you mean about the pinky being frozen and alive for 2 days???

If by Wednesday you mean 3 days ago, then no, that's not really enough time especially if it's a hatchling. Leave it go til next Wednesday and try again. Just make sure it has clean water so it can drink if it's dehydrated. 9 times out of 10 pet store workers don't know jack about reptiles.

the pinky is still alive, but if its dead in the morning can i freeze it.... i dont really want to waste a pinky.. it was $1.65... i tried putting it in his hide with him and giving him complete darkness.... its been 30 imn... wish me luck

I would say it's not a good idea to feed in the cage or on substrate that can be digested, but apparently that wouldn't matter. If you're going to ignore advice that's given to you, then by all means do whatever you feel is best based on your experience and research. I'm out.

Whoa, whoa, let's hold on a moment here.

Only, first and foremost, you've just gotten the snake. It should be left alone for the first three to seven days with NO handling so it can settle in to its surroundings. Yes, this means no feeding too, but don't worry -- they can go quite awhile without food and have no problems.

Second, what is your setup like? The snake is likely just nervous after the very stressful event of coming home with you, but it helps to know what you have the snake living in/what its conditions are just in case something there is a factor.

So for now... take a breath, let your mind be at ease (your snake won't starve to death), and just let the baby settle in to his home while you do some research on corn snake care and browse these forums. Also, it would help if you purchased Kathy Love's corn snake manual. Tons of good information in there.

Welcome, by the way!

i have the snake in a 20 gallon aquarium... i know its big to feed and i just set all of it up yesterday... i have an uth on the right side and 2 hides... for right now he is in a little kritter krate that i bought to bring him home in.. the temp is around 80....

Truly I'd toss some empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls in there as well. Hatchlings especially like to hide all the time - the more you provide it to hide in the more it will move and feel safer in it's new environment. On a side note how are you measuring temperature?

I've got exactly the same problem. My Corn-Snake, Sal, is only two-weeks old, and she's less than a foot long (she's one of the smallest things I've ever seen!), and my dad and I bought her on Friday. We've given her a feed today (frozen pinky), and she hasn't eaten yet, even thought it's been there for hours.

I heard somewhere that Corn-Snakes are most active in the night, so my dad put off her light for a while. Is that okay? Should we leave her light on during the night?

-Sal.

I don't have any light on my viv. Just natural light form the windows. I would not leave a light on the viv overnight. A red light if any at all. Your snake will eat when it is ready. Give it some time to acclimate to it's new surroundings. It will be fine. Spend some time reading thru the posts on this forum and pretty much every question that you could have is already answered in various threads. Good Luck!!

i'm measuring the temp by a digital thermometer i bought at the pet store.... i have him in th kritter krate, inside the 20 gal. i have a heating pad under have the 20 and a uth on the side.. the temp stays around 80.. hes on the floor for the moment until i can get his stand from storage.
i took out the pinky wich died over night and will go to the store wed. to by a f/t... it cant hurt to atleast try a week after getting it. the store said he ate on schedule every wed. so he hasnt eatin in almost 2 weeks.... they sad if hes dehidrated, to stick him in a bowl of water with a ventilated lid for about 20 min... then let him go for an hour.... that way he'll feel better and not be dehidrated, and then put him back in the container "dry" with the mouse so they keep bummping into each other. thats how they said they would get him to eat if i just switched him out for another one. theres no way im doing that... i want this one. and by all the research ive done on here, i'll leave him alone for a few more days than try again... ive held him before reading the posts cause the store said since he was boren hes been used to handling. i just hope i havnt stressed him out to much....i havnt touched him or messed with him besides changing his water since saturday....i think i'll try on wed. thanks for everyones help.... glad to be part of them forum

Sounds like your on the right track now. Keep researching here. And forget about the "bath" for dehydration, just keep water in the VIV.

Good Luck

Finally!!!! He ate it!!!! I guess all I needed was a little patience... Thank you everyone so much for your help!!!! Ive decided to name him Trigger... lol.. just sounded cool.. thanks again everyone!!!
