right, so after about three years of wanting a snake, i am finally able to get one this weekend. i have bought my viv in advance, and am just trying to make sure everything is running smoothly before i purchase the snake, in order to make its new home as comfortable as possible. with the viv came a hide, a water bowl, an infrared heat lamp and thermostat. it also came with some 'coco chip litter', and despite trying to search, i cannot find any information on whether this is a suitable substrate for corns.
if anyone knows anything, or has anything i should add, please let me know :)

That all sounds good, but you'll need two hides. So it can hide on both the warm and cold sides of the vivarium and feel secure. Also your going to need a good thermometer, those cheap dial ones don't cut it, you need a digital thermometer with probe, you can usually get them for pretty cheap too, about £8 ish, and they're invaluable mate. Also most people keep their Corns on Aspen bedding,

And you shoul get an under tank heater, not the heat lamp. The snake wants to lay on the heat.
 
If you do use the lamp and its inside the viv, make sure it has a protective cover so the snake can't get burned on the hot bulb.
 
oh yeah, i forgot. will deffo get another hide when i pick up the snake on saturday :)
cheers. yep only got one of those stick on thermometers, will be sure to get a good one asap.
i had always planned to use aspen, but this bag came with the vivarium, so i figure ill use it up first, as i cant find anywhere where it says not to use it.

As for the under tank heater, i was flicking through kathy loves comprhensive corn snake owners guide, and it seems to suggest that lamps are sufficient, as far as i can tell :) when i get some money i might replace it though.
yes i have a cover for the bulb, plastic coated wire mesh, will that do it do you reckon?
i have the viv up and running as i plan to use it, and i will attemp to attach a photo. any other tips will be greatly appreciated:)

If it's a small hatchling it can easily get through that mesh. Looks like 1/2", fine for older corns but not going to keep out a small one.
 
righto. i should be getting a normal hatchling, fresh from its three feeds. what do you suggest about the mesh? and good ideas guys, that makes a good, inexpensive home :) cheers
 
For measuring your temps, I use the maplins digital thermometer, but a quick net search threw up some others.

Can the shop you got your viv from not supply a replacement bulb-guard with smaller mesh? Having said that, a net trawl seemed to show they all looked like yours, so you might have to customise it if you can find a retailer that sells wire cloth. Wickes do a 6mm wire mesh panel
 
I don't know what to use as I do not use lamps, especially not inside a viv. But to be safe any mesh or holes should be 1/8" or smaller.

new hatchlings can be very thin and squeeze through holes even thinner.
 
hi,
if u have a metal mesh lid, you can place the heat lamp on top of the metal lid, i use this method, and an undertank heater as well, i rotate using them, one off and one on, sometimes i have both on.
 
right, im still looking for a soloution. one that might work, get like, mosquito nets and put them around it? would that melt do you reckon? and nah montanatburg, i have sliding doors.
thanks for the links, theres a maplins in cambridge ill check that out today. im getting my snake tomorow and just wanted everything to be set up properly :)
