Just some questions from a new corn snake owner

So I got my 5.5 month old snow corn Simon about 2 weeks ago. I've fed him twice so far( 2 pinkies each time). I had some questions about how he's behaving and was wondering if it was normal.

-He rarely spends any time in his enclosed hides, but instead he hides among the leaves I have placed above each hide or under the substrate. I guess it's not too bad since he's still pretty hidden in the leaves, but I thought he might prefer a more enclosed area.

-At night he is very active in trying to escape, always climbing up the tank wall and pushing up on the roof. He does this from the time I turn off the lights at 9 until around 1 AM with little breaks in between to just sit around.

-I try to handle him every day(except for 48 hours after feeding him), but when I go to get him he is very reluctant to be picked up. It's sometimes difficult to get him out of the tank because he'll quickly escape me and start tunneling. Am I stressing him out by handling him too often, or is this normal behavior for a young snake?

Hope I'm not asking too much, I just want to know if this stuff is normal. Thanks! Here are some bonus pictures.

That's a really pretty snake!

If he's choosing to spend time in his leafs, then that's probably where he's going to be most comfortable so it's nothing to worry about. My snake has a 'favourite' hide and will rarely use his other hides so it's just a snake thing!

Corn snakes tend to be more active in the night time so this is totally normal, nothing to worry about.

Corn snake babies think everything is out to get them so are incredibly nervous so don't worry too much about it. He'll calm down with regular handling and as he gets older. If you cup your hands around him, he should feel more secure than picking him up by a single point on his body. Try handle him everyday for a couple minutes and build the time up more as he gets more comfortable [emoji4]

Hope this helps you a bit!

That's either 100% normal, or we both have really weird snakes. :) Even at 15 moths old, Athena still burrows occasionally, usually after eating. She did it almost constantly when she was younger. She also still likes to stretch up to the top of her enclosure. As to the handling, consnakes will very rarely bite. Their defense mechanism is to run, and they tend to be a bit jumpy as babies. Now, Athena will crawl in my sleeve, or around my neck, or really anywhere. It just took a little work. My advice: when you pick him up, don't hesitate, or he'll get even antsier. Just keep working with him!

Some reptiles accept their "prisons" quickly while others don't. Some reptiles are very trusting of their captors right off where others aren't.
I think the best way to gain trust is NOT to handle your snake until he/she is comfortable with their environment including what is going on outside their Viv. I know this is always difficult for new snake owners not to want to "play" with their snake but to expect a young snake to get used to its new home and you the big bad prison guard is a lot to ask of it.
Totally normal behavior. :)
