keeping the snakes together with newspaper substrate

a close friend of the families is giving me 2 corn snakes.he has kept them together along with 2 other rat snakes in the same cage, no dividers or anything. he also only uses newspaper for substrate. sooo i was wondering if it would be ok to keep them together in a cage and if newspaper for a substrate is a good idea?
thanx for the help

well

well 2 corns together can cause some problems. First of which is if they breed when the female is too small she could die from being egg bound. Second if they are both males they could fight. Newspaper is ok substrate, not the best to look at but it works. Most of the people here use aspen shavings. My snakes love to bury themselves in it. Which makes feeding day fun. have to dig through the shaving to find the little guys and gals. The problem with aspen is that the corns really like to stay hidden. So if you want to see them everytime you look in the tank I would stick with newspaper. Just remeber to change it often, it can get wet quick and hold the water in which could be bad for the snakes. Hope this helped somewhat...

using news paper as substrates is alright. I personally like using aspen bedding as substrates cause it looks better and I think that the absorbtion is also better...

keeping snakes together is not a good idea because
this might happen...

Or Even this could happen

This is a photo by Shannon Brown, these snakes were non feeders before too....

Also keeping rat snakes and corn snakes together is even a worse idea than keeping two corn snakes together...
I personally would never do that....

well. . . the two snakes have always lived with eachother and the two other rat snakes. sooo could they still do that (( refering to the picture takin by shanon brown))????? or should i just definitly go with keeping them apart?

IMHO, I would never put two snakes into one enclosure for sure.....unless it's hatchlings (like right out of the egg ones.....those would be in the same box with it's own brohters and sisters......other than that I never risk putting them together.....

so even putting a female and a male together ( 2 that have been living together) is an incredibly bad idea?? im sorry i dont mean to keep asking but i guess im just hoping for someone to say " ooo its ok then" but whatever yoiu guys think i will respect!1

my three hatchlings are not related and i keep them 2gether and when i have my new heat mat i intend on housing the 2 females 2gether and the male on his own.

i see no problem with housing corns together so if they have lived together there whole lives i wouldn't worry to much as long as they have enough space to get away from each other so i would increase the size of the tank by another foot or even two with lots of hides for them

Go ahead they will be fine!!:D

Especially since they are a male and a female, please do not house them together. They are very likely to breed at some point without you knowing about it or planning for it. If the female is too small (less than 3 ft., 300 grams), this could be very dangerous for her. She could become egg bound, and possibly die from it. If it were two females, I would probably say it would be okay as long as you had a large enough cage and separated them at feeding time and for a couple hours afterward (they stay in feeding mode for awhile). But with two males or a male and a female it's different, and more dangerous.

HEY SIMON

you scared the bejeebeez (sp?) outta me.......I've been waiting for some tanks to fit in my cabinet and had to keep some babies togeher until I got them (today) and I had nightmares last night that the 2 blizzards and 2 ambers I got from rich z all ate each other and were dead :( ....... well I got them set up today and all is fine WHEW!!!!

It is especailly not a good thing if you keep a male and female together. Not that they:
1) get stressed out
2) get sick easily
3) may eat each other
4) FEMALE MIGHT GET PREGANT and have egg bound and die because of egg bounding.

dartguy,
this is not to scare you, it's true. These things have happened before.....the photos are just a warning. It's a good thing that yours are now separate and they were all alright......

lol didnt mean to scare ya dartguy!!!! what if i wanted them to mate, maybe not just yet though. soooo if she is 2ft or smaller she shouldnt mate correct????

I'd put at least another foot on that estimate personally... probably nearer to double what u said.

Yes newspaper is fine.

I house my two female corns together (01' okeete female and 96'anery female) and find that they prefer to be together. They both were housed in there own cage up untill a couple of months ago. Before, when ever i cleaned there cage i would put one female along with her hide, into the other females cage. By the time when i was done cleaning the cage i would always find both females shareing one hide. Now i house them both together and they ALWAYS share a hide. I do have more then one hide in there cage but they are always together in one hide.

I should note that i do feed them in seperate cages.

I have also notice thay my baby anery's prefer to be together. When they hatched i housed them all together in a plastic container with 3 hides. By the next morning i found them all hiding together under the newspaper. I kept them together untill they shedded on monday and now they all have there own "home".

Just to add my opinion...I house my MALE and FEMALE together with no probs whatsoever. The male isnt of breeding age yet and I will probably separate them in due course (simply because it is unlikely that they will breed if they are housed together). If your snakes have been together this long I dont see why they should suddenly turn on each other.
