killing mice

lol why would anyone build a co2 chamber and waste there time and money. that takes too long too the mouse is in there breathing in harmful gases the best way is to stick it in a ziplock bag and chuck him as hard as u can on the tiles or wall its instant death...(would u rather instant painless death or be gased to death for 20 minutes...:S?

thats torture to the mouse lol

seems pretty obviuos too me...oh and why both killing your pinkys and fuzzys they cant bite neway u might aswell keep it live

What's torture is your grammar, or lack thereof. *shudder*

CO2 is not harmful, how do you think all of those frozen mouse suppliers euthanize thousands of mice a week? They don't have teams of people sitting there whacking mice all day.

CO2 is pretty quick. It's heavier than air, so it sinks to where the animals are. If you have a non-tight fitting lid to limit the mixing of the carbon dioxide with normal air, it works pretty quickly.

Not to mention CO2 is a heck of a lot "cleaner" than throwing them against a wall or counter. I've seen that result in a mess in the bag before.

I normally just flick mine on the back of the head. Once you learn the right amount of force, it goes quickly. But I'm not going to do more than 10 at a time if I can help it. Just takes too long.

Pinks and fuzzies are smother resistant, so gassing is not going to work as well for them. I usually just freeze those straight, they don't last but a few mins before they expire. I put them in old ice cube trays to keep them separate and from huddling for warmth, works like a charm. Although most of mine are fed live to save the time and trouble.

And Owen, before you go recommending things next time, I think it would be wise to do some research before espousing your "knowledge". CO2 is generally accepted by several institutions as a humane method of euthanasia.

This report: http://www.avma.org/issues/animal_welfare/euthanasia.pdf is from the American Veterinary Medical Association, and in the Appendices there are handy charts which summarize the acceptable ways to kill mice and other small animals. Some methods, such as lethal injection, are of course inappropriate for snake food, but others apply very well.

Personally, I have a CO2 chamber which cost me maybe $10 to make, if that, which works for mice and rats of all ages if properly "charged" (allowed to reach a high concentration of CO2 gas) before use. All the rodents are unconscious within seconds of being placed in the chamber, and in 5-30 minutes (longer times for pinks and fuzzies) they are dead. It works out, financially and temporally, to be the cheapest and easiest way to kill rodents (because you can euthanize them en masse), as well as causing no pain or suffering to the rodents. Of course, frozen/thawed is still easier and cheaper--the CO2 chamber is only for my one snake that refuses anything but freshly-killed prey.
