Kitties and Corn Snakes...

Hi there :)

I was hoping someone could help me out with a quandry I'm in... I've wanted a corn snake for a long time, but my ex hated snakes so couldn't have one. When in my local reptile shop the other day, I found and fell in love with a baby corn, who I'd love to have. The only complication is my kitty, an ex-feral cat who's still quite twitchy and very scared of having affection taken away from her. I know it sounds silly, but I don't want to be not giving her as much attention and I don't want her getting stressed that there's another pet in the house. I would have to keep them separate because of Indra's remaining feral habits and I wouldn't want harm coming to either of them, but I don't want her to feel left out. Am I just being silly, and does anyone have experience of this? Indra's one of the lights of my life, and I adore her, and she's been treated so badly in the past - I don't want to give her any more pain for any reason.

I have 3 cats, and a few other pets, and my cats seemed to be ok when I got my others...one cat, Strasti, who truly is my baby -- and quite attention-needy -- will complain and lie by my feet if I'm not giving him attention when he wants it, especially if I'm paying attention to another animal. However, I'll just finish what I'm doing with whatever animal and then turn to Strasti & give him a good brushing -- which he adores -- or something else that he likes. Then, all is fair in love & war once again. :)
 
i have 3 cats & a whole host of other animals, i am pretty lucky as they all get on pretty well with each other. my advice would be when you introduce your snake to the house make a really fuss of your kitty, get her some nice food & give her loads of love & attention ... generally spoil her. then i expect you'll find that she wont find your snake a threat to her standard of living but as something quite interesting to watch.
 
Frankly, I think the thing that will be worst for the cat is knowing that her new string toy is shut away in a glass tank for some reason... :grin01:

But being serious, it shouldn't have a big impact at all. You won't be handling the snake for hours on end, so she should do fine. My cat doesn't even care about the snake, and barely gives it a second glance.

I dont think you are being silly at all! Its nice to see someone who is that concerned about their animals happiness! :)

Having said that, these are my cats reactions to the snakes...

Duchess used to sit and stare at Cornflake alot, she was fascinated by him and really loved watching him. Although she would usually focus on a point in the cage that wasn't necessarily where he was at the time...

The other cats couldn't care less and have not altered their behaviour in anyway since I got the snakes...

I honestly don't believe that your kitty will get jealous etc over a snake, maybe over another cat or even a dog but not over a "prey" animal...(I am convinced that cats see snakes as living string...)

my cat is amazed at my baby corn, she sits and stares through the glass but she is starting to get over it. Don't worry about the attention too much, just find the time when she is otherwise occupied to handle your snake, like when she is eating. And remember there are going to be at least 2 days in a week when you can't handle your snake because its digesting its food. So i think , go for it
